Id like some help before i start removing and buying parts...
I wonder if we could put our heads together to diagnose/confirm a fault:
Its an Astra Gte 16v
Car is running perfectly until this afternoon, come to start it, no joy.
Engine does not rotate, solenoid is happily clicking away though, have power to horn, windows etc and dash which flashes with the solenoid.
Tried bump start, no joy.
Id conveniently stopped near a exhaust/battery centre so i begged some help. Got some multimeters out and did a few tests, battery is ok, the alternators bust though (his words).
Jump started it, ran fine (at first). Tried to get 3 miles home, power drains away, starts missing, dies, roll to a stop...
Manage to beg a jump start from somewhere (memory hazy). 300 yrds later, we roll to a stop again.
Diagnosis: alternators bust, like the man said.
Have now towed her home.
What is there to go wrong with alternators. Voltage regulator, no ive had that before, its not that. Brushes? These can be replaced cant they? Whats the going rate for alternators these days. Was going to ring an auto electricians tomorrow, before i start hunting parts.
Just thought id put this teaser to y'all. What do you reckon??
