bin looking at this forum for a couple of days /week,Enjoyed the info, decided to try an alter my 2l eco. As you all know the ecotec is not as powerfull as earlier vauxhall engines ,and in my heavy vectra it certainly shows.
So on to tune up time , 1.out with standard filter. in with k+n .
2.dump air inlet pipingto box . in with 3" pipe up from behind grill,(lowest grill), Bastard of a job took about 4 hours to do.( poxy frigging air con fan an gubbings).used plastic
rainpipe so i could cut n glue , also lots of fittings available 45offsets etc.
3. rocker box cover IS restrictive but not like an xe. Just drilled 6mm holes 20 off app, to help improve ventilation.
4. Large n small bore vented to atmosohere from rockerbox cover, down back of engine to underneath of car.(so i dont smell fumes).
5.In with bosch4 point plugs.
6.in with magnecor leads
7.In with ekotek air valve
8.Blanked off EGR valve
9. disconnected vacume line to fuel pressure regulator, (ups the line pressure a bit ).
10. Removed intake trumpet in air box, and ducting pipe also.
11.Cleaned throttle butterfly and idle valve, checked for full and free move ment and lubricated.
12.Filled tank with Texaco super, dont like shell, cost me an engine a few years ago.
RESULT. OH YES well ill be buggered A definate improvement, much zippier ,better throttle response, smoother, better idle now 900 rpm. Pulls like it should do,but a bit wheeziere at 5.5 to 6 thou rpm. looks like the cats gonner go, and maybe the back box as well. SO a good result in my books NOW where is my welding kit!!!. cheers.
reconnect the vacuum pipe. yes it will up the pressure at idle, but this pressure is meant to increase linearly with manifold pressure, but without the vacuum pipe it cant, so you will be running dangerously lean at full throttle.
rich at idle and lean at throttle is very very bad...naughty modifier
Many thanks for the replies and comments. i have acted on your comments about the vacuum pipe ,did not realise the gravity of my actions. .Looks like its back to the drawing board on the fuelling front ,funny thing tho i read about that mod!! in a car mechanics mag about 2l vectra diagnostics in the nov issue01 so nobodys perfect, luckilly no harm done. cheers
HI rob, as far asi know the 1.6 16v is well tuneable, esspescially the inlet manifold which is suppossed to be restrictive, made that way apparantly,. this forum on mods has been a great source of info in general to me and i have picked up some good tips ,try modding your air box ,its always worked well for me on all my vaux hall cars. cheers
