Lightbulb Cav SRI 130 Conversion into 1.8 Manta B "How to'

"I haven't done this conversion yet but for anyone looking to do it here is the "how to":

Click here to see the "SRI 130 > 1.8 manta How to"

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 8 valve is a breeze to fit.

All the 1.8 parts can be used including the

    viscous fan,

all the bolt holes are there on the block for everything,

including the 1.8 dizzy drive (bolt holes on the cam cover)

    Sump,

    exhaust,

g/box in fact everything is a straight bolt on.
    Fiddley bits......

Water hoses, it is possible to cobble together the existing water hoses to fit the SEH using the two small carb pipes to go to the SEH throttle housing by using a straight connector and some extra hose.

Other fiddly bit was a mounting bracket for the air flow meter. (email sales@cutomsolutions.me.uk ) he can supply a suitable custom made mounting bracket at a ridiculous (cheap) price

The worst fiddly bit was extending the loom so the ECU fits in the drivers footwell.

The loom is very simple too.
it is all self contained and like me you will have to fit high pressure fuel lines (I used rubber items for ease of fitting and the fact they won't rust with something stupid like 100 BAR burst pressure)

Make sure the Hones are bored if fitting new rings

Also you will need an injection tank, not a problem to source one of these for the coupe, max price 15 is what I would expect to pay and of course you will have to fit a fuel pump, again not too much of a problem

Clutch...... I used a 1990 2.0i Carlton clutch pressure plate and release bearing.

Bolt on your 2.0i ohc Carlton Clutch,

    your 1.8 box,

your 1.8 dizzy drive and timing cover,

    swap the sumps over,

bolt on your 1.8 engine mounts,

OH I think you need to swap the oil pick up pipes too.
If you want to retain the viscous coupled fan, there are bolt holes on the Sri Block for this too.

    Cobble up your water hoses,

    wire it up,

    bolt it in

    and start it up.
    Nothing to it........

Also had some head work done on my engine

For a cheap and very simple conversion you cannot get better. I was talking to Chris Cotteril at the AGM on Sunday he told me he was getting 160 bhp from his old 8 valve SEH.

Of all the jobs, I think I hated fitting the fuel lines the most.
And trying to solder the wires on the extended loom on a windy day (soldering iron didn't keep hot enough)

Don't let the fact that the sri 130 is a FWD car enter into your head.

Basically all you are doing is turning the sri engine round 90 degrees to mate up with the 1.8 Manta gearbox.

"EVERYTHING" off of the 1.8 will bolt onto the 130 engine

But you may find the SRi 130 alternator to be a tad higher in the amps output department than your 1.8

. On the SRi engine you will find 3 (i think) engine mounts (throw theses away) and a load of water pipes bolted onto the block, throw these out of harms way but hang on to them in case you want to cobble some pipes up later.

dont forget to fit a spiggot bearing into the end of the crank or youll knacker your imput shaft on the gearbox

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What made the SRi 130 quicker than a standard SRi?

2 Bhp more than Astra GTE 2.0L due to better exhaust route

    Revised Bosch Motronic Engine Management

Larger Intake valves & exhaust manifold

    More compact combustion chamber shape

Bigger bore exhaust along the length

    Shorter, lighter Pistons

    Revised valve timing

Integrated, adaptive engine management & ignition system

Engine block both stiffer & lighter

    Crank & con rods lightened

Friction loss cut by thinner piston rings & valve stems

New high efficiency oil pump & cooler in front grille.

Smaller water jacket for quicker warm up & enhanced pump.

    Standard: 130Bhp @ 5600 &133lb ft @ 4600 rpm 0-60 circa 8s

    Unhappy

    Standard: 130Bhp @ 5600 &133lb ft @ 4600 rpm 0-60 circa 8s

Gotta admit, not a clue what all that translates to. obviously some of it but "0-60 circa 8s"???

anyone know what it all means?

    What have i missed out?

One thing i can remember is:

"dont forget to fit a spiggot bearing into the end of the crank or youll knacker your imput shaft on the gearbox"

But the only other thing i'm unsure about is the ECU!!

Can I use the ECU from the 1.8 manta with this engine? I mean just until I can find one from a cav SRI 130. Will it run with it?

The 1.8 manta had a carb. The closet thing to an ECU was the radio.

circa means "near enough", or "around", 8s is 8 seconds.

it accelerates from standstill to 60 miles an hour in "around" 8 seconds.

Could someone offer some advice on how to extend/wire up the ecu before i take on the job. From what i've heard it's a pig of a job to do. Does that just mean it's very fiddly and time consuming or does that mean it's very difficult and complicated.
That's the only thing i haven't managed to find out about - whats involved with the ecu.
appreciate it - gonna be a big help when i start doing the engine soon as i get my engine hoist fixed and come to the ecu.

does anyone have an ecu, i've looked on eBay, and at my local scrap yards. Only thing i haven't ran a search yet on is this forum (gonna do that now).

    What will work?
    SRI 130 (obviously)

    oh yea - Fuel Tank/Pump?

Does this have to be from a cav SRI. I mean does the operation of it differ from any other vauxhall (injection) fuel tank & pump.

The sri 130 engine is multi point injection. does it matter.

Just theirs alot more fuel tanks/pumps available at my scrap yard from other cars like fuel injected 1.4 astras / 1.8 Cavaliers and other vauxhalls.

What fuel tank/pump will work? I'm not sure but i'm probably gonna have to modify it to fit where the 1.8 tank used to be. Not a problem cause i can easily drill out new holes and put the bracket that wraps over it back on. Just is their any difference in the mechanics/operation of an SRI tank/pump to any other cav/astra?

Have a look on the Opel Manta Owners Club forums. There was an explanation there recently. Use the tank from a GT/E coupe as it has a swirl pot inside and the return line. Get the pump bracketry whilst you're at it. I've often wondered if the loom from a carlton would work. Friends with the 130 engine have put the brain in the passenger footwell so the loom is long enough.

Ta, big help - appreciate it. Let's hope he doesn't want to much for it considering he doesn't know if it def def works.

What's a good price to pay? I was hoping to pick one up for free from someone who doesn't need theirs (very skint) but have a little bit of money coming in next sunday.

I've seen them go for a couple quid and at the scrappy for a non sri ecu they only want a couple quid (loads of scrappied round ere.
