I've heard so many loose stories about the 1.6 16V engine, with
respect to the Corsa GSi version, and the other versions that I
decided to ring up the daddy of knowledge.
So I rang up Steve at SBD, and asked him, what were the main
differences between the Ecotec 1.6, and the Pre-ecotec version of
the engines, as I was always told, this is what they were.
His answer was:
The only pre-ecotec engines were the 8V engines. All 16V 1.6
engines are ecotec. He said that people did seem to be getting
confused about it. He went on to say that there is a small
difference between the Corsa GSi engine, and the rest of the
engines fitted to Astras, Tigras, etc.
This difference was slightly larger inlet ports on the head, which
gained around 3-4bhp over the non-Corsa GSi version. His words
were, it doesn't matter which one you get really. Even highly tuned,
the difference will only be 6-7bhp. If your searching for everything,
then get the GSi lump, otherwise, get the Ecotec.
The Jenvey Throttle bodies go on both engines. The port difference
can be spotted on the block no. by the exhaust manifold. All Corsa
GSi engines with the larger ports finish in 726
So there you go... even with that info though, the guy at Just
Novas said he had a vauxhall engine data book, which listed the
'ecotec' version (i.e. the non-corsa Gsi one) as having a slightly
larger cc capacity....
It's a confusing world out there.. anyone else got an opinion to
