It'll get pushed into the sump itself and end up blocking the oil pickup pipe, bad news to be honest.
I understand that there are later gaskets available which are less likely to leak - I think these are rubberised.
Well Vauxhall use sealant. The trick is to make sure all faces are clean and dry and put a thin film of RTV on all faces, and only just tighten the sump bolts enough to pull it all together. Leave like that until the RTV has set (a couple of hours is the minimum) then one by one remove the bolts and apply thread lock and tighten to the specified torque working in a diagonaly opposite sequence.
