runs fine on tickover - but has sod all power until the turbo really kicks in... takes ages to spin up. its the GM 1.7 turbo lump. we reckon it must have good compression on all four or it wouldnt run on four at tickover...
blocked lifter. This would only open the valve halfway, thus causing lack of power and clattery noise. what is the best way to determine this? stick feeler gauges between cam lobes and lifters - there should be zero or near zero gap? is there a cheat way to get the lifter freed? (i'm gussing flushing oil and rev the t1ts off it)
bu66ered fuel pump - much as above... best way to check?
i dont really want to take the cam out unless I have to - re-setting the fuel pump is an ar$e of a job cos I have to get my mate over to do it.
also - catalysts on diesels - are they strictly necessary for the MOT? we think its blocked (previous engine went badly t1ts up, possibly threw cr@p down the pipe, blocked cat). should we try punching a hole through it (along the pipe ) to see if it clears it...
only got this as its a cheap runaround for work..
