Friend is after an XE to put in his Nova to run on 45s.
One of my clients has an XE which has done about 160k and I could probably get it for around £150. The chap had bought the whole car (H reg GTE 16v) to put in his daughters 8v GTE which she has now sold so its no longer needed and he's fed up with it ruining the look of his driveway. He is a mechanic and reckons its a good engine (he wouldn't have any shite for his daughter).
- Would you say it was a good engine to buy or not bearing in mind its gonna be running fairly high spec and the miles it done? Obviously it will be rebuilt but sometimes that doesn't guarrantee anything. What are your thoughts?
- Secondly, what would you say/advise would need to be done to the engine as part of the overhaul?
The eventual spec will be headwork, cams and 45s. So the valves, springs etc would all be new. The head skimmed etc. Its mainly the bottom end that is the concern. I think its a coscast head.
- If its not burning any oil would you still bother reboring?
you'd have to wait till you got it apart really before you know for certain what needs doing. you could do a compression/ leak down test but you still wont really know what its like inside, at that many miles i reckon you're looking at, re grind on the crank, re hone, over sized rings or pistons, new shell bearings and for a bi of re assurance a new oil pump
Good point Trevor but low mileage doesn't always mean pukka.
I had a 1.6 SV astra and that had done 172k and ran like a dream because it had been well serviced all its life. A mate bought a 1.3 astra that had 53k genuine and that had been ragged all its life and never looked after.
End of the day its all old metal I suppose. there all gonna be around 10yrs old! Suppose I've just answered my own question really! lol
