engine out... and..oh.. don't see *that* everyday..

clutch springs were half worn through where they were rubbing on the flywheel bolts...

I know I didn't have much clutch left but flippin 'ell - only about half the friction lining was actually touching the flywheel.

you know I thought it was slipping  - good job I didn't try for another couple weeks on the road - looks about ready to explode

    Alright Gary, how's it going?

You're taking your engine out? - What are you planning to do to it - I take it that it's gonna involve an SBD catalogue and a fat pocket of cash

It seems that Gary's happier with the engine out and in bits than he is driving it!

    am I that predictable ?

any interest in the car yet ? (if it's not already sold) - I notice it's going with a laptop - if you'd consider selling it separately drop me a line.

so what's your next work of art then ? - going to be something if it's better than the Nova

    Sold it... err... no

I've had a two peolple RING ME to tell me how much they like the car and I shouldn't sell it, one bloke rang to ask where I got the cage and one geezer rang to ask me if I would sell the throttle bodies seperately!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesus, selling the car is like mission impossible - I don't think £5995 is over pricing it - do you?

If it doesn't sell through the Total Vauxhall advert I probably won't bother re-advertising it, just let it sit in the garage over winter - maybe have a little fun with it next year?

As for my next project, well it might well involve two wheels?

As for your engine, what spec are you going? 230Bhp SBD Cams, Head, Pistons, Steel crank - an early christmas present heh? Oh well, happy christmas!

about that - steel rods for peace of mind, standard crank though - got an overbored block and a new head, going to try and see how much I can get with standard pistons and bigger pockets - I'm addicted to low end torque now with the tapers so I'm loathe to go really wild with the cams - cash 'saved' will go toward an lsd, and then a respray next winter - will be the end of an era

i did my clutch about 2 months ago, the one in it was the original factory job, i have no records of it ever being changed, and it was literally worn right down to a fag paper thickness, all the rivets were flush and shiny.

I'm changing mine tomorrow. Providing the input shaft comes out OK that is.

    Oh and lightened flywheel.

Good luck Tom! I have never had a problem pulling the input shaft so hope it comes out OK for you.

Can you do the flywheel without removing the gearbox? I don't think you can, but no doubt you will know for sure. If not now, later!

u can always get the shaft out if you use a long bolt, a washer and a old brake disk. put bolt through hole in brake disk, grab with both hands and shock it out using your weight

the thred on the input shaft is a very very odd thread, couldnt find a bolt to fit it. its same as bolts on the half moon flywheel cover the other side of the housing.

weld another bolt onto a half moon shape plate bolt or a gearbox casing bolt and grind it down. thats what i had to do as well.

arrgh...stop staying 'input shaft' - along with 'crank bolt', it causes a strange reaction where I fall down and can't get up for a bit.

Well the input shaft came out OK. I used an old screw that's not the right thread, but it went in anyway and then used the nail pulling bit on a hammer to pull it out. Came out very easily.

To change the flywheel I took the whole gearbox off. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Getting the input shaft back in was more hassle though.

if you leave the clips on till the last minute you can use your fingers to centralise the friction plate and its a piece of piss to get shaft located.

    That's what I did.

Because I was having trouble with the input shaft not wanting to go that last bit I removed the clutch completely to sort out what was going on. It still didn't quite want to go the last bit so I reasoned that the resistance was from within the gearbox. At which point I decided I was going to make it want to fit.
