My engine has just hit the 110K miles mark and decided to start smoking a little.. The emissions are fine and the rad water is clear. I'm doing the breather mod soon so if it still smokes after that I was thinking of throwing some money at it and getting it reconned.
So, can anyone give me a list etc of things to replace besides the obvious. Or anyone got any stories of what to look out for etc plus any tips on squeezing a bit more power from it...
To do a compression test first run the engine until it is warmed up. Remove the injector leads and the spark plugs.
Screw the compression tester (£14.99 Halfords) into the No1 spark plug hole and crank the engine over for a few seconds and write down the figure on the gauge.
Unscrew and re-set the gauge, put a couple of generous squirts of engine oil down the No1 plug hole making sure it goes onto the bores, screw the tester back on and crank again. Write down the reading.
Repeat for all the other cylinders.
If the compression is good then suspect any oil smoke to be down to the valve stem oil seals, or a breach in the head gasket between the high pressure oilway and the cylinders. Either way the head has to come off.
If the compression is low on the dry test and substantialy higher on the wet then the rings are knackered.
If it is low on both your valves are burnt out.
If it is low across two adjoining cylinders the head gasket has breached between them.
The compression test seems to show that everything was in working order and all cylinders had near enough the same compression (wet/dry)
My brother hasnt had time to look at much else yet however he did discover that the small breather from the top the the engine is blocked where it enters the engine lower down. He says it will need drilling out as its solid.
