I have a Vectra 1.8 LS 1996. I recently done a service on my car changed the oil filter, Oil, Fuel Filter and Spark Plugs. When I was removing the spark plugs there was a lot of oil inside the wells where the spark plugs fit so I though may be the rocker cover gasket had gone so I replaced it. Today I got a compression tester and took the readings they were ( working from left to right ) Cylinder 1 = 17.5 Bar Cylinder 2 = 16 Bar Cylinder 3 = 13.5 Bar and Cylinder 4 = 15 Bar.
Do you think its the cylinder head gasket ? please help I am confused I dont know much about cars.
The other syptoms are I have to regularly top up the Anti-Freeze every 2 weeks or less. ( I think this might be a leaking radiator )
The idiling fluctuates when the car is not in gear i.e at traffic lights and even cuts out. There are now error lights on in the car or when this happens.
When I first put a rocker cover gasket in for a bout 10 minutes all I saw was white smoke coming from the exhaust its not there not.
Hmmm, where to begin.
When the rocker gasket goes, oil goes everywhere, some you'll see, some you won't (as you've found out). It'll foul the leads too, so remove them and blast with carb cleaner to flush it out. Let it drip dry and repeat a couple of times.
Check your radiator for leaks. Let it idle for about 20mins and see if the temp goes above 100(shouldn't).Rad fan should kick in before that happens.
Welcome to the idle problem. See if your idle control valve has an X as the final letter on the part no on the item. Remove it and flush with carb cleaner. Finish off with a little wd40 (it's a moving part so need lubricating, which carb cleaner gets rid of).
Which error light(s) come on in the car ? Is it an orange light with a lightning sign through it ?
Read the archives on how to read the fault codes on your car using a paper clip.
Cylinder 3 seems a little low. Did you do this as per the haynes manual recommendations ?(engine warmed up, relay removed, throttle held wide open) ?
Thanks for reply first of all. I have now cleaned the leads as you recommended and the car is fine. Its starts up as normal and this time there was no oil in the plug wells.
The radiator does some on ( thank god ) I am getting no error lights at all. I think the idiling is maybe cos I have a K&N filter fitted maybe there is no cool air getting to it. I did follow the haynes manual as you described in your reply.
