The Macpherson strut you have to imagine first, and imagine where the spring platform is, where the piston exits the strut.
Now all the wheels you use with a Macpherson strut sit underneath the spring platform. The strut under the spring platform is narrow. Maybe only 1.5" in diameter or so.. The spring platform on the coilovers is generally lower so you get the longer spring. Then the wheel must not enter the space of the spring. This will have a much larger O.D compared to the bottom of a Macpherson strut.
Thus there is less clearance, and you'll probably have to space the wheel, or get a lower offset wheel. It may depend on the width of wheel. But even my 15's which were 6" wide were fairly close to the Macpherson strut!
