The problem is the previous owner says the car just started rattling top end one day so took it to a garage. They swaped the head, with no cure. Then they said the pump but the owner couldn't afford any more so flogged it (to me). The rattle is really loud, from the lifters it sounds, all of the though. I'm running on the lack of top end oil pressure theory at the mo.
It was a fun day. From previous thoughts and the previous owner providing a new oil pump with the car we were on a quest to change it and hope that cures the problem. Today was to be simple, take the sump off, swap the pump, reassemble as all the other stuff had been taken off before. Also previously noticing that the water pump was not in the correct position with the lug locked in the backplate. How in the hell they got the cam belt on I have no idea, the tension must have been so tight!
Maybe not, AutoVaux had sent the wrong pump gasket and a dipstick gasket instead of a pick up pipe gasket. Oh well, a trip to vaux sorted that (open on a sunday!). Then the sump refused to budge, after some fears of cracking it from smacking screwdrivers in here there and everywhere to get it to let go it finally did. Old pump was off at last only to find the new pump was the old type with no auto tensioner mounting. Fook
Old pump is now looking ok from looking at its condition and checking clearances. Hmm.
Through concerns of not finding any problems and noticing some shoddy workmanship of the garage doing the previous work (Swapped the head or something) we braved the rain to take the head off. Found one exhaust stud missing, one been recut to a larger thread with a bolt used, and one normal thread with a bolt used instead of the normal studs/allen key nuts. Now I'm getting worried..
Just started taking the head to bits now, things dont look too bad yet. Anyone know the link for the lifter overhaul guide someone wrote?
How much oil does a normal XE/LET have top end on cold start idle when you take the filler cap off? This one had some, but not enough to splatter around out of the hole like I would expect.
Any ideas welcome. Going to rebuild the head, and look over the block oilways for blockages. May try another set of lifters, and may get another pump anyway (old one looks fine and don't want to waste money on things that won't cure it).
Long post, hope you're still reading.
