I have a buyer for buy old engine, but he is not sure whether it will fit. He has a buggered J Reg Cavalier 2.0 8V GLI and i have an old G Reg Astra 1.8 8v engine. Will it be a straight swap and are the gearboxes the same. They look real similar except a few differences, fuel rail bit different, gearbox connection bit different etc. It has a cat its a j reg. Will the engine swap affect this.
take out the cat cos its not needed on a j reg, and the 18se will **** it anyway, itll go onto the 2.0 gli gearbox ok but use the 1.8 clutch and thrust bearing. also keep all the 1.8 engine loom and injection components and itll be no sweat, nites work tops you will need to put the 18se coil into the cavvy i think. youll have to extend the red/blue fuel pump from the drivers footwell to the engine bay to connect to 1.8 loom.
The gear boxes are different, the 1.8 has an F16 gear box, and the 2L has an F20. Although fitting the F16 into the cav shouldn't be a problem as the Cav SRi's are fitted with them!!
As for the engine, to do a straight swap you might run into difficulty as the ECU and wiring looms are different.
It might be worth your while stripping the inlet manifold off the 2L engine, and replacing onto the 1.8. Also use the 2L exhaust manifold, as this has a lambder sensor.
This will save changing the ECU's round.
Hmmm, my f plate 2.0 GLi cavvy had an f16 long box as standard. astra has f16cr.also, i think, but i`m not 100% certain that the crank pickup has less teeth on a 1.8 than a 2.0 . has anyone tried this (1.8block on 2.0 ecu)?
