XE engine running problems please help me before i go insane!
hello, I've recently been having problems with my 1.8 ecotec engine.
it all started when i noticed that when i turned the key in the ignition to phase one the fuel pump would wherr away for a second as its suppose to but now for some reason the fuel relay keeps clicking on and off randomly at exactly the same time as the fuel pump down the back on the car. to try and cure this problem i changed the fuel relay and checked out the earth for the relay on the inlet manifold. that did nothing at all! took the earth off and turned the key and the relay just gave out a fast buzzing sound which is what its suppose to do. i even tried relocating the earth but it still does the same thing. on phase one when the key is in ignition, if you go into the engine bay you can hear the fuel being pumped in intermittently as well and the idle valve control humming continuously. the engine runs but dies almost instantly and is hard to start.
I had a friend who is a really good mechanic and electrician come round today to try and figure out the problem armed with a wiring sensor and we discovered that a little green and brown wire attached to the relay keeps fluxing in power. when earthed the relay seems fine but then power comes in and it cuts out including the fuel pump. i've tested the fuel pump thats fine and tested relay and thats fine apart from that wire. does anyone have any idea why it is fluxing?
i tried something like that yesterday evening. with the fuel pump connected continuously and then tried to start it and the engine just wouldn't start. thats with bypassing the fuel pump relay and also tried doing it by earthing the wire that was fluctuating and still wouldn't start! strange
still its going to the vauxhall garage on thuirsday
the engine starts up. it will run as long as you give it some gas ie push the accelerater down . as soon as your foot comes off the gas it revs die down and it eventually cuts out. the engine is fine. the only thing is why should the fuel pump relay be cutting in and out and intermittent times??? has been replaced but no change and one wire that goes from the relay or into the relay (green/brown has power fluxs from it) it seems when that wire has no current running thru it the fuel pump works fine but as soon as some power cuts into that wire it clicks off and the fuel pump stops
ok. if i listen i can actually here the idle valve humming. thats the solenoid making that noise isn't it? that would mean its working wouldn't it? my old engine the head gasket did blow and chucked nasty brown water/oil round everywhere, the fuel pump humms to build up the petrol pressure doesn't it? it still doesn't really explain why the fuel relay is pulsing on and off. why would the relay be flicking on and off??? could it be the faulty ecu sending varying signals? i'll clean out the idle valve later anyhow. worth a go. it did seem when we tried to hard wire thje fuel pump permanently on the engine didnt want to start.
