theres not a lot inside them, just the hydrauilc ball and sping in the centre part of the tappet. The main course of noisy tappets is that they havn't got enought oil in them. When you tak the out you'll notice the very small oil hole on the side, it dosn't take much to get that blocked up with crud or old oil deposts.
Thats why flushing the engine with oil flush and renweing the engine with oil often removes the problem. But sometimes they do get bloocked up and the only way to do it is to remove them and clean them out by hand. There is a guide on how to do this, do a search and your'll find the URL for it.
But otherwsie regular oil engine changes is required with engine oil flush to remove all that it can in the top half of the engine. It could also possible mean that the oil pump is stuggling or there is a small blockage in the oil wasy which means the pressue is not getting up high enough until the engine gets warm again (ie thinner oil).
