I've just refitted the cams from my cav, first fired up and sounded like I'd left the socket set inside the cam cover, definately not the lifters and much more metal knocking sound. Turned it off and took the cam cover off and checked the cam caps. I'd misread the torque settings and used the smaller m6 setting from the haynes manual (which was 10mn instead of 20nm). re-did it all and nows much better but still making a noise, have I fooked it up or should they be a bit tighter ??
unless you only did em finger tight then there's no way that would cause a bad noise.
are you sure it's not the lifters settling ? - they really can make an awful racket if they've drained - sometimes they won't settle for 20mins or so - thing is you can't rev it so you just have to let it idle and grit your teeth.
Definately not the lifters, I did clean and check the ball valve on each and filled them with oil prior to re-fitting, did also get a couple of seconds of lifter noise while they presurised, but this noise is not the same, sounds like a bag of nuts and bolts in the tumble dryer only with timing/rythym (it's in time with the engine speed and is more cluck than tick). Did get quieter with the caps tighter though which makes me think it's this area.
