F16 or F20
I have an opportunity to get F20 gearbox (read: import) for rather good price. The engine was swapped with the C20NE Turbo (US only) and uprated - I am guessing just over 200 bhp
The US version Astra Mk2 aka LeMans had only short-ratio F16 (I am surprised its still holding up). While this setup was quite OK for the factory 1.6 76bhp engine, due to the short gears, I does not quite perform with the new engine - I am only able to get the top speed of 187km/h on the 5th gear and the engine redlining without any problems.
Also, I believe my acceleration times/quarter mile times (15.05s seems rather slow) are also being affected by the following:
- excessive wheel spin due to short ratios
- need for 3 gearchanges on the 1/4mile run
- ability to use the turbo's power band more efficiently
I feel the long ration F20 will improve the accelaration/quarter-mile times.
What are your thoughts on this? I dont want to spent money on importing a gearbox if it is not going to be of any help.
Does anyone know what are the gear rations on the short F16 and F20? With this info I can use one of the programs to simulate accelaration and compare it to the real data.
