my leather gear gaiter in my mk2 was pretty shagged so i bought one for a mk4 outta scrappy. after totally mangaling and trashing the gear knob, i managed to get the old gaiter off but then noticed the mk4 one was too small. having now got no gaiter is a big problem cos i can't get the car in reverse...
the gaitor is the 'leather' type thing around the gear shift. The pull-up reverse bit is seperate to that and you don't need to take it foo to change the gaitor as the proper one has a split in it that opens wide engough to get off the top, or un-clip the bottom, take out the lever & take it off the bottom.
Vaux sell the gaitor and it is only abou £10-15.
They also sell the handbrake gaitor.
Never seen an aftermarket gaitor that isn't comparable to LED washer jets (TAT), but I'm sure there probably is one out there......... somewhere........
On mine if you pull the leathery gaiter up over the gear knob you can see the underside of the gaiter. Where it meets the stick, if you look carefully you should see the end of a zip tie that holds the top of the gaiter to the stick. If you cut the zip-tie end off the top of the gaitor should open up enough to lift over the knob and off.
If you've busted the reverse guard then it's probably going to be another trip to the scrappies.
the lift up collar is only to make reverse idiot proof anyway, in any case theres no way you could get it in reverse while travelling forwards. my point being you could just hacksaw off the fork that lifts up and over the stick surround.
while we're on the subject, is my dash the same as a GTE? i mean, i've looked at other normal astras and the dash seems taller in them (the red distance) because the centre console goes all the way to the bottom of the footwell (the yellow arrow) whereas mine stops at the transmission tunnel?
