I've been offered a fully rebuilt 1.9 gti engine, polished + ported head, Kent 270 cam and Vernier pully. (He has all receipts)
It apparently cost the bloke £1400 to do but he has decided on a 16v engine now.
The engine has done 2000 miles, bottom end was rebuilt by him before that - new crankshaft bearings etc, and head was then bought by him, as is, it had recently had new liners, valve stem seals etc.
It is out of the car, and therefore I can't see it running.
I've spoken to the bloke, and he sounds decent enough, I told him it was a bit suss spending that much on an engine, then selling it, he says he wants to get more power with an Mi16, and is selling this to fund it.
I've said i'll have a look, but put it to him that i'd only pay £200 up front, and the rest if engine runs OK when in.
Going to look, in the next couple of days (Newport Pagenell, wherever that is) - anything I should look out for?
Cheers Dave, i'll let u know where - don't know address yet.
Any tips on viewing engine - I suppose there's not much to see.
One thing I thought, if its a Kent Cam, do they have Kent logo on em - if so I can check by taking off rocker cover, same with Vernier pulley too. He also said the cam-belt is Kent item - is this the same as the Vernier Pulley?
Oh, and dont worry, still keeping faith with Gsi, but Pug is fun, and went to get it rolling again.
Buying a 2nd hand engine is always risky. It might not be the spec he says or it might be shagged. Thats the risk you take really. As with buying the car, check it over carefully for signs of leaks etc. Check for mayonnaise in the oil, stick yer finger into the filler cap and see if there is any sticking to the rocker cover. Look down the water-ways and see if there is sludge deposits in them. Pull the spark plugs out and check the colour against a haynes manual as a rough guide. Dunno if its true or not but Ive been told that if you sniff the oil and it reeks of carbon/smells burnt at all then the engine has been ranted?
And also check the guy out. I know its difficult to judge but does he seem dodgy? is there loads of engines/bits lying around his garage etc.
your plan of paying a deposit and the rest when its running is pretty good but you still wont know if it has been ported etc.
You should be able to spot the vernier pulley, and the cam belt will have the logo on it is red letters. Not sure about the cam though, I cant see them stamping a logo into it.
