    Timing Belt Replacement Problem

    Hi Guys,

I appear to have hit a small problem. I have a 1998 vauxhall astra mk4. The car was overheating so I decided to change the thermostat however also changed the water pump, cam belt and fan belt as it was all in the same area. The cam sprocket and crankshaft flywheel were both TDC and the new belt was then put back on. However the car sounds like a tank, has no power and is running awfully which can only mean I have unfortunently messed up putting the cam belt on I have a video here of the car running etc: 022.MOV - YouTube

Now my question is that I need to fix this, however I understand from reading various things that piston 1 needs to be at the top when turning the crankshaft flywheel manually? Various people say you can use a screwdrive to feel it when it reaches the top? Does anyone have any experience of advice on how I can fix this without messing the car up completly?

Anything advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Daniel

If everything was set to TDC then it should be timed up right.

Its known to happen, but are you sure you've got the right parts i.e water pump, and belt.

I would double check the belt for signs of wear even thought its new, As my friend got timing kit, and water pump for Xe,

His car starting running rough, turns out the water pump was wrong.

as cav lad says could be possible wrong part somewhere. or it could be that its slipped out of time, so re-check it against timing marks (assuming you have them, as some dont :@). timing it up i found when doing it myself, when turning the crank by hand on pulley end it goes 'light' which indicates tdc. probably just telling you obvious so sorry if i am

    Looks like a 1.4. It is 8v.

Useful advice mate would be to join a different forum and ask on there. AOC or something like that.
    Good luck with it.

Ok, here we go. Had any body on MIG actually helped? What I was saying is he should ask on a more specialized website/forum such as AOC. Which is obviously Astra owners club. There is nothing. "anti-MIG" about it.

Now stop trying to find faults with everything I post and concentrate on the dickheads that ruin this site by posting useless/irrelevant information.

As regards to you addressing me as a muppet, let's see you BUILD something interesting instead of simply BUYING something boring.

You bought the Astra like that!! And a Corsa with a bigger engine is soo 90's.
This site will not develop any further than a primordial mess due to the newer members being made to feel unwelcome.

Melv, have a look at my picture and read what the writing says chap.

Where and when have I been wrong? The Tigra timing thread? Did I time the Tigra up wrong? If you think I did then you sit red to get back down to collage! If you at all even think I was being serious when I said the crank was out, you need to take a lead out of Paul's sarcasm guide.

    And FFS it's stevo. S T E V O ooooooo not ****ing Steve.

    Re: Timing Belt Replacement Problem

    Guys,

I am happy to say the car is now fixed. I placed a small peice of dowl in the spark plug socket 1 and waited for the piston to hit it which indicated TDC. Infact the engine seems to tick over better than before. So yeah good news. Hopefully this post will help someone else.

    Cheers
    Daniel
