8v oil squirters?
I am currently rebuilding the engine in my nova gte, I noticed the replacement big end bearing shells didn't have oilway holes in them, while the originals do. Behind the hole in the upper shell, is a hole that goes through the conrod, the other end of the hole is only about a quarter of a milimetre in diameter. Is this a piston squirter? I've never seen or had any experience with these before, hence the question. Secondly, are these standard for e16se conrods,
or what might these conrods originally came from? As the engine was supposedly built to a high enough spec before I bought it, but with no proper supporting receipts etc, but upon inspection during this rebuild, it does indeed look to be built to a decent spec, some decent enough parts have been fitted to it and plenty of flow work and balancing/machining work etc, which makes me curious as to know if the rods might be from something else.

Re: 8v oil squirters?
Anyone know what these rods might be out of?

Re: 8v oil squirters?
There are some engines that use piston cooling oil squirters like that, rather surprised a NA engine has them, though.
With a NA engine, I'd just use the shells undrilled - unless you REALLY want to go to the hassle of drilling holes yourself.
Anyone?

Re: 8v oil squirters?
I decided to retain the use of the squirters, as the engine will be used for rallying. I had the option of either tryng to drill the holes
properly in the new bearings, or refit the old ones, which I did, as they were in perfect condition with hardly any noticeable wear.
Would still love to know out of curiousity what the rods might be out of though?

Re: 8v oil squirters?
Just remembered an old hotrodding trick for drilling the holes.
You need an old cap, that's surplus to requirements. Put the old shell with a hole in and mark the location of the hole in the cap, drill through cap, put new shell into the cap and the drilled hole in the cap will correctly align the new hole in the cap for drilling (take your time so the shell isn't deformed) and lastly, carefully deburr both side of the shell's hole. The reason the cap is used is because it correctly supports the shell preventing deformation if done carefully.

Re: 8v oil squirters?
Thats a handy tip alright, I was thinking of using an old cap for supporting and securing the shell while drilling, but didn't have one to handy, I'll keep my eye open for old surplus ones in future, they'll come in handy I'm sure.
