Hi guys,
I am new on here and thought I could get some advice on what the best oil to use on my 1.8 mk4 astra would be? 5w 40 or 10w 40?
I have been using Castrol Magnatec but was told that Millers oils were the best?
Cheers![]()

oil is oil to me and normally use cheapo synthetic stuff from my local motor factors, never done me any harm. i know a few subaru guys though who won't use anything other than millers but at £50 a tub i think that's pretty steep. maybe im just tight lol
Partly depends on how the vehicle is to be used, the environment and how hard it's being worked.
Generally, regular oil and filter changes are at least as important as the oil used, due to oil contamination over time. A lot of slow, short trips will be harder on the oil than a lot of high speed cruising, due to cantamination.
I believe in the UK, you can get a discount card* signing up for a 'Vauxhall owners club' a 10 quid fee repays itself with a purchase of the genuine Vauxhall oil and filter from a dealer.
Personally, I use Mobit1 which, IIRC, is a 5-40 grade oil, with filter changes each oil change.
BTW, I would recommend the use of a magnetic sump plug as well.
*I trust someone will give guidance on that shortly.
Haven't bought the vaux semi for ages on TC but it used to be less than a tenner. Unless it's a track car, it's fine to use.
I use Millers CFS in turbos and track cars but it's 50 ****ing quid a gallon and total overkill for a NA road car.

Thanks.
Think I might just stick with the castrol one... no point in spending too much money on millers! Although it is roughly the same price the last time I checked. £35 for a 5 litre bottle.
Jeebus. Join MIG and your local dealer will sell you 4 x 5l cans of 10-40semi for £39.99+vat.
They're there, in their room.
Deffo use 10w40 in that.
For the love of God, please read the rules
it's a pleasure. we have been trade clubbing for many years.
there is also a web site where you can look up any VX part number you like, which you can copy paste into the trade club site, to see if its available on TC, this makes your membership well worth while, and not just for some decent discount on the day to day oil/filters/plugs etc.
Ahh awesome! So how do you actually go about redeeming the discount, I read somewhere that you just need to show a Mig membership card? I don't have one!?![]()
Usually you do, but I just shout "VBOA affiliated club" until they give me what I want as I lost my card several house moves ago.

Erm. You get a new card every year.
you are showing as a member just under your name above.
as i understand it from our memberships gurus -
if you have just joined you will get a membership pack soon, (lots going out weekly to you all)
if you have joined yonks ago you should already have it, (did you get a big envelope with stickers/key ring etc etc)
if you have joined and your address details are incorrect in your profile, or, someone elses paypal has paid for your membership, the pack goes to that address until you change the details in your profile.
you get yur card, swerve up to the dealer and tell them you want to use trade club at the counter. order yur stuff, some of it might be at about 20-40-60% off, you hands yur card over, they take the details from along the bottom, you comes away a smiling mofo. jobs a goodun
I've been a member a couple of years before, but a few years in between without membership as i've dabbled into other car scenes! ;-) Always come back to Vaux though! I'm not sure I ever got a card or stickers though... i'll update my address on my profile as I moved late last year and maybe a pack will turn up soon!![]()
Ive always used 0-40 full syth Castrol Edge. Infact, i swear by it.....
LOVE VAUXHALLS, HATE THEIR GEARBOXES!!!!
Cool, yours will be in the post soon. we are awaiting a new stock of Stickers.
Tathan?
I know the response to the oil question might be a bit late now, but here goes.
I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.
5w-40 engine oil | 5w40 oil
Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.
As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR, Shell Helix, Millers XSS or Motul 6100
10w-40 car engine oil | 10w40 oil
While the GM stuff may be okay, it really is the basic option. If you want better than the minimum, get away from the own brand stuff.
Cheers
