steering rack vectra b 1.8

is there a way to tell if power steering rack or pump are on there way out?? someone interested in the car reckons they are and apparently its a weak point on the sri's the problem being that on full left lock there is a grinding, rubbing noise while driving forward which i presumed was the wheel rubbing the arch but cant really seem to see if it is or not and after this punter went on about the rack etc was wondering if it could be more serious. only started this week when i put the 16" alloy back on was running the 15" spare for a few weeks.

any help ir tips would be appreciated and thnx in advance
