    Re: timing belt problems

well i fired it up and the belt moves in towards the engine when gouning round the cam pulley so i turned it off

the belts actually rubbing against the block now which is whats stopping it coming off the cam pulley

when looking at the water pump pulley it looks as if sticks out further than the cam and crank pulley, could it be that?

its doing my head in now

right after a little bit investigating

    my engine number is 14277550

    have a look here http://vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk/acat..._90272361.html

my current pump has 21 teeth, could i have the wrong pump? there seems to be 2 listed for the 20seh on that website

i wonder what the different could be ?

    Re: timing belt problems

First, have you had the head off, the cam pulley or anything else off on it or is it still in factory trim?
I ask because I was wondering it it was possible the head had been skimmed at an angle, or the cam' pulley put on incorrectly?
If the head was removed, were there any alignment dowels that may have been missing, that would have allowed the head to be fitted at an angle, which would have run the belt off the edge?
I don't have any stuff on that specific engine, but the NE has a thick thrust washer between the crank pulley and the crank (I assume it was put on the right way round, if the engine had been partially dis-assembled before?
Normally, at least one pulley on the belt system has a guide for each side of the belt, to prevent it walking off one side or the other - it doesn't look like you've got a guide for the inside - am I just not seeing it, or is it missing?

Use a 450mm/18" steel rule's edge against the various pulleys to check they're in line with each other - not angled - and there's no offset. that should allow you to confirm if the w/pump is correctly alighned.

    Re: timing belt problems

the top half of the engine has been rebuilt by myself with a new cam from autosprint

the water pump does have and edge around the pulley but its slipping off the other side

there was a washer behind the bottom pulley initially but looking at autodatas sheet there shouldnt be one there which is what i thought the problem was in the first place

the water pump sticks out slightly more than the rest of the pulleys but that does have the edge around it to stop it slipping off

i’d go with the belt having a slight ‘crimp’ from running half off the pullies so thats why it tried to walk a little wen you first got it back on, looks spot on now though

yeah, you can hear a slight rattle in the video, theres like a washer between the shield thing on the pump and the pulley which is spinning and making that noise

gonna have to try and sort it but really dont want to take the pump of again

The belt being too tight would also make it run to the rear of the pullies
