Vauxhall Oil ok to use on VW Diesel engine ?

Quick one for you oil gurus.

My old man has a 2003 130BHP Passat TDi. He's currently using Castol SLX to top it up between services - this is whats on the bottle :

    VW SAE 5W-30; ACEA A3/B3/B4
    VW 504 00/ 507 00

Now he's paying over 15 a litre so I said I'd check on Tradeclub and can get something similar for nearly half the price for him - the question is, will it be ok for his car. The Vx stuff has this on the TC listing :

    Longlife Super synthetic 5W30 dexos2 -
    SM/CF A3/B4/C3 GM-LL-A/B-025; 1 litre

My gut feeling is that it should be fine but what are your thoughts ?

Yeah as long as it's diesel oil (so right detergents etc) and right viscosity it'll be reet. The only worry would be, very possibly, if it was in warranty but obviously not on a 2003.

    Ok - next question .......

    What would you use in a 2003 Vectra C 1.8 16V petrol ?

Dealer sold me 10W/40 semi-synth last time for the father in law but all the Oil sites say to use Fully Synthetic

    Ignore him.

The push towards fully is because of longevity not performance. If you put semi in, you'll need to change it sooner than the schedule says.

you are using the wrong oil for the Passat.

It's a PD (pumpe duse) engine and must use the proper 505.01 spec oil. This is what my Fabia needs, basically the same engine as your old mans.

See here for examples of suitable oil > VW - Engine Oil - 505.01

The cheapest I found was the Quantum brand that the VAG dealers use. 5l = 18+vat from my local Skoda dealer.

This is the stuff I've got - Quantum Platinum

meets the proper 505.01 spec and should be available from all VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda dealers

Re: Vauxhall Oil ok to use on VW Diesel engine ?

Hmmm interesting as the oil he's using is the oil VW have given him and he's meant to be on the long service interval.

The Vauxhall Fully Synthetic (around 23 for 5L) is meant to conform to 505.01 - interesting to see a cheaper alternative in the Quantum brand.

hang on I've read your post again - I was a bit quick with my reply

The 507.00 is suitable but as you say its the long life stuff.

The Quantum stuff is also available to 507.00 spec

personally I'd never go 20K on the same oil but that's an argument for another day...

I'd like someone to tell me why PD oil has to be used in PD cars. Loads of bull**** on the net, no one has an answer though.

Every manufacturer has specified a specific standard the oil had to reach for longer than I've been on this planet, i's nothing new and people have always put whatever they fancied in which most of the time is just fine.

Oh and MSG, stop saying retarded things then editing your post after someone replies. I thought you were banned from posting in technical anyway?

I thought the thing with the pd engines is that the cam lobes are under a much higher load as there is a seperate injector pump for each cylinder run off the cam. You are meant to use the pd oil as it has more additives but not carry it on to the extened service interval as you would with pd oil in a tdi engine for example. I have seen a pd engine where they used normal semi in it for a while and it ate the cam.

Yeah that's what I read. Not convinced as the wear seems to be present randomly in them, not necessarily on ones that haven't been run on their oil. I think it's more to do with VW's design. I can't see the GM oil being *worse* at supporting a load than the VW stuff anyhoo. Unit injectors have been used before without things wearing out prematurely.

Yeah I agree there is probley a weak spot in them. I never saw that amount of problems on the volvo hgv's, just 1 scuffed up cam but that was probley oil stavation. But I'd still stick with vw pd oil in a pd to be on the safe side, at least if it comes back you've done what vw wants and dont have a customer giving you a hard time over it.

Yar, that's why i said if it was still in warranty then use it. Depends how much it is I guess, when I had my Fabia it was fecking expensive.

What a load of crap preying on people's fear and lack of knowledge. IMO.

I use that Vaux Syth stuff in most cars.

As for the Vectra I'd use the 10w40. The fully syth stuff IMO is a little thin as the car gets older.
