Simplifying an X20XEV engine, advice welcome

    Hi guys

Right I've got an X20XEV engine and I want to remove as much of the EGR type stuff as possible

First off what are items 1 and 2 in this pic? EGR and something else?

Can I remove them by fitting the plate underneath (3) from an early X20XEV that doesn't have 1 and 2?

Secondly whats the black box in the breather pipe? Any benefits to removing?

I can't remember what 1 was as It's been a couple of years since I looked into this but if you remove 2 and you're using the standard ECU, it'll still need to be plugged in as it'll throw on the EML.

Isn't number 1 part of the 'secondary air injection' system?

As above part 1 is part of the SAI and connects to the big fan (summat to do with warming the lambda up), part 2 is the EGR valve, The big black box is the fire trap or oil condenser or summat, It was a mod. Think part 3 is a manifold type block, early ones are the same shape but dont have mounting holes in them.
If you look under the exhaust shield there is another pipe connects to the Exhaust mani aswell.

Cheers lads, so shall I disconnect 1 and 2, but leave the wiring plugs plugged in?

And then get an early #3 to blank it all off?

Thats what i'm looking at doing, or blanking the egr and leaving the rest redundant. If you do it as suggested you will need to do something with the pipe that runs across top of exhaust manifold, think you can just cut it off and weld the ends, seen all sorts done tbh.

yeah part 1 lets air into the exhaust manifold during cold starts, creates secondary combustion in the exhaust heating the cat up quicker

I believe so. Fairly certain the same part fits from the C18XE which has the casting for the EGR but no holes for it. I've heard mention of using the same from a Z20LET but don't know if it's a straight swap.

Z20LET one is looking promising guys

Gonna clean it up and try fitting it later

Re: Simplifying an X20XEV engine, advice welcome

    Yep it works

Z20LET doesn't appear to have a sender in this part for the temperature gauge, so it's blanked off. I rounded one trying to get it out, the 2nd plate I tried I had to WD40 repeatedly then heat up before hitting a 1/4" imperial socket onto it which bit hard enough to remove it

    Standard Calibra/Cavalier sender then fitted

Whats the crack with leaving something plugged in to stop the ECU missing the EGR valve? Do I need to leave the whole valve connected or can I put a resistor over the plug terminals?

Re: Simplifying an X20XEV engine, advice welcome

yep you can use a resistor as the EGR is only a coil to open and close measure the resistance and find a sutible resistor pref about the 1 watt version as smaller ones may burn out
or on some ECUs you can disable the EGR with tech 2 saving the hassel

Oh and what you plan on bringing to the pod in march???

That's classified information Gaz, on a need-to-know basis.

    You don't need to know

Re: Simplifying an X20XEV engine, advice welcome

I've done all this on mine... removed pretty much everything though the EGR valve is still in place however is blanked off (Coke can FTW!) and I've also binned all the secondary air injection and cut the metal pipe from the manifold, clamped and sealed the ends. It's fine, idles fine but on idle it's making a constant squeak that goes away if I open the throttle flap. So, basically when there's vacuum in the inlet - constant squeak, when there's positive pressure in the inlet = no squeak. So, I can only assume it's drawing air somwhere down the side of the ehad or around the inlet manifold. Can I find out where? Can I feck!

At this rate, Saab power could be the easiest option!
