    Astra G 1.6 8v Problems

Hello Folks, forgive me if i've missed a topic when searching but i couldn't find a definate answer to my questions.

    Car - 2001 Astra 1.6 8v

Q1 : Water temp sensor doesn't work, could this simply be a dud sender unit?

Q2 : Speedometer doesn't work, what could cause this? Rev counter works fine.

Q3 : Car randomly stalls when driving, previous owner said something about a short. The car will start almost instantly or will remain running if kept in a low enough gear. When its about to stall a light appears which looks like a battery with a * in the centre

Q4 : Fan doesn't work, at all, nor does the AC other than a blown fuse what could cause that, broken fan motor?

    Thanks in advance folks

Q1. Could be. Earth the wire on the sendor, just to test guage.

Q2. Take a look at the top of the gearbox, this may run a speedo cable. If not it's electronic. Could even run of the wheel hub on this year. Not sure. Google should have some info.

Q3. Will stall at the moment as the speedo isn't working.

Q4. Fan will needed testing and yes, check the fuse.

    Speedo info.

Astra G, Speedo not working, Non ABS model HELP! please (WITH PICS)

    See photos.

If you have ABS, its on the hub. If not, the sensor is on the gearbox.

Thanks Paul, i did notice when swapping wheels that there was a sensor on the DSF hub yet nothing connected to it, couldn't see anything to attach it to either. I will get a better look at it tomorrow.

Could this also cause the stalling as its been suggested that the speedo may set the idle control valve?

    Who suggested that?

The ECU will set the idle control based on the speedo.

If you noticed it wasn't connected, you'll have the type that fits on the top of the gearbox.

The unusual part is that the PSF hub does have a wire going to it.

Also, without sounding like a complete mong or doing out trying to lock up the brakes, how can one tell if the car has ABS?

You should have an ABS check light on the dash? Or perhaps a control unit under the bonnet, will have a fair bit of brake pipework going to it.

Big ABS pump gives the game away, as would an abs light

No ABS light, to dark to see if there is any sign of pump under the bonnet.

Hopefully the spares car (1.6/16v) sensor will fit.

Not yet, unfortunately i have limited access to a ramp so wasn't able to get a look for it.

Is there a way to access the area the sensor will be without being under the car?

    Re: Astra G 1.6 8v Problems

There doesn't seem to be a speed sensor on the gearbox. looking at this image..

there is no sensor on my gearbox in that position.

I take it this means its taken from the hub, so i need to get the wire its missing...

    Re: Astra G 1.6 8v Problems

    Ah i see! Oops Lol.
After checking you pic, yep yours looks like it's off the hub then as the speedo drive is blanked off on your box. If you are sure of the history of your car and it hasn't had a box change.
Otherwise just have a quick look in that area for a loose plug that may have been the speedo connection. If not your going to have to find the Sensor connection on the wheel hub, the wiring usually comes through with the brake pipe.
