C20LET Mk3 Astra Lsd... before and after

Hi. Running a LET in a mk3 astra. Always wondered how much difference it actuli makes. I Spose id like to know if ur capable of doing a lot more, other than it feeling better. Can u approuch exit faster? It's an f20 I have in mine. Recently upgraded to 5stud with 16's. It's actuli quite well handled. Although ideally I'd like around 280horses, which brings me back to the question. What is it like?

    Cheers.

The harder you rock it the better it feels and the more difference it makes, been riding a Lotus with lsd on the track after it was just fitted and been driving it lots of times before without. Was amazed by how much further I could actually take it still feeling secure.

    But that's a different car...

yes you can exit faster as when you take the corner usually as you are leaving the corner / island you would wait until your straight ish before planting your foot because it would just spin up but as it does the lsd transfers the power away from the spinning wheel over to the opposite so you get maximum pull and no spin up thus faster out of the corner.

    Re: Lsd... before and after

I've had a LSD fitted in my FWD F28 for some years on my C20LET engine (still running 200bhp as standard). Trouble is I don't know if it has made any difference because I don't know anyone with FWD F28 C20LET car to try. Put it this way - I've had no trouble with it, having better quality tires helps

Even on a standard Cav Turbo with FWD you'll be spinning up wheels on coming out of tight bends and roundabouts with open diff

my gte was crap in the wet, I got done by a 125 put put up a hill because no matter how softly I accelerated as soon as I got boost it would just spin straight up lol

    Re: Lsd... before and after

the biggest sensation is a "self steering" effect. say you are taking a fast right hand corner with firm grip on the wheel. when the unladen drivers side wheel loses traction it applies torque to the passenger side (yeah we knew that bit) but because the passenger wheel is on the outside of the turn it pulls the nose of the car tighter into the apex.

its a scary sensation at first, but you retrain your brain quickly.

the downside of it, as joker said, you will get many times when there is too much torque even when two wheels are being equally driven. in the rain on corners it will turn safe wheelspin of the inside unladen wheel (on an standard open diff) to power understeer (with an lsd). some restrain needed in those situations but will still outperform an open diff.

Bare in mind you're not talking about an LSD there, you're talking about an ATB

This is what sounds gd. There's a lot of scoobys and 4x's runnin big brake round my area. I can stick with em, even on the islands and bends, but i feel at disadvantage! I obviously can't go all out as they do. I imagined havin and LSD to do what you said. Cheers bud

its like nite and day, but as said if its wet, u'll loose traction on both wheels and end up with no steering rather than just spinning the inside wheel, in the dry thou the harder u drive the more traction u have, in my standard 150bhp gsi, i was out paceing a mk4 gsi (200bhp) around castle combe, just because with my quaife my entry, mid corner, and exit speed was miles faster

Is it the quife diff u got? Theres a transX, and another called Kaaz I think it is. Think its a must, as for wet days.. I don't bother takin the motor out tbh. I have a diesel day to day.

    Rite, time to save!

mine is a quaife. As i understand it is better for road cars as u can still park without the lsd tryin to do somethin stupid.

It's a big learing curve when you first start driving with one. I know that.

The trans-x plated lsd is better for track days and everyday driving as it only engages when a certain torque is reached.
Quaiffe is better for 1/4mile, driving everyday is difficult as the lsd is working all the time.

Best mod I have done. accelerate much sooner out of a corner on track and actually get pulled in as opposed to out.

On the road takes some adjusting though, especially accelerating out of roundabouts, You learn to hold the steering wheel a bit tighter for sure.

I must be missing something here or my quaife ATB in my F28 isn't set up right (I've had it for about 8yrs now). I haven't had to get used to anything - just drive normally. Though I do have ultra cheap tyres (18" for £50 a corner
