recently bought a mk3 p reg which has a 1.4 engine in it but has problems with it but was thinking maybe puting a 1.4 sport out of a corsa but would this fit quite easy as if so would like to get one for it how easy would it be tho as want something that can be dropped straight in without having to mess about changing stuff
Any engine you want will fit with some messing.

My guess it is a C14NZ, I'd drop in a C16NZ, almost same economy and a straight fit.... little more power....

You need to know the places to look, some have the engine code stamped on the front between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder, some on the edge towards the gearbox.
In any case an 8V looks much smaller and even a small 16V looks like rather a large engine because the top is much wider....

i think your going to struggle mate to be honest, have a browse through the projects and technical info sections on here as theres a library of info there for you to digest.
as Paul said, any engine will go in with enough force but the easiest conversion in my opinion for your first attempt would be a 2.0 8v.

well i dunno what plans are yet but soundiong more like my engine is ****ed to be honest so either gonna stick a diff one on or same one or sell cheap for some1 to convert to a nice redtop or something jst dunno wat to do

tbh if you dont no what your engine is and you dont no if its 8v or 16v id just weigh it in and buy another astra, there cheap enough unless you know some one to do a conversion with a decent engine (2.0 onwards)

Later ones did, quite a few around from '96 on, nowhere near as many as 8v though.

Ian, what you have is almost certainly going to an 8v. In reality, if you are struggling to identify the engine you would be better advised to sell the car and buy something else with a bit more welly. If you are struggling now, a conversion of any sort is going to prove too much for you. That's not to say that you cannot learn, but learn first, and undertake a project once you have learnt everything or you'll never finish it.
i would not be doing work mysel just wanted to see what engines i could put in it without to much hassle
