theres no way someone can make a chip in isolation from the actual engine in your car, and claim it will do X Y Z.

    Re: ebay chips

There is no reason it wont work if its a generic map for std engine webber used to sell chips like this called star chips and superchips are just generic programs to .So who ever said you cant do it without the engine infront of them is sort of wrong you can make a generic map for any std engine but would need to be researched on a real engine to start with or how would they know what the chip realy did in the real world .Realisticly the eprom u get is a few quid you pay all the money for the soft ware maybe there using someone elses copied soft ware that could be why there cheap .I know a few people who have purchased chips i mean real flash eproms not some 9p 4k7 ohm resistor of ebay and had no probs with them atall as they say you pay your money and take you chance

    Re: ebay chips

star chips were mappable that was the whole point of them. there is a weber main dealer and rolling road 5 mins up the road which i use regularly

just to correct you, i didnt say this ebay chip wouldnt work. i said theres no way it will be mapped correctly for his engine, and thus wont see the same gains as the engine the ebay user allegedly made it for. mechanical tollerances, engine wear, conditions when it was mapped, all sorts of reasons that add up to no two engines being the same.

    Re: ebay chips

the starrchips iv had were just a flash eprom all ones i had just turned up in a webber box ready to fit with installaton instructions so wasent mapped to specific car just a gen engine spec .Ther should be some gains as the ecu will acomodate small changes as standard as will a new chip even if engine is worn ect . All std oe ecus in a factory use a generic program for the same engine and arent mapped for every engine manufactured as the programing covers most minimal changes in the engines life span

And how well does 8000 rpm go on your average engine??

Apart from whether it doesn't damage anything, how much sense does it make?? I reckon the power curves at such rates have gone down the drain by far and the time to shift long overdue??

exactly my point, no two factory engines (of the age discussed) deliver exactly the same power, torque or economy. neither will they have the same power/torque/economy with a plug and play chip, after 100k miles, that deletes all the safety margins inherent in OEM maps. infact theres every reason it could make performance worse than standard on some engines, others will have negligible results, others will increase peformance.

not worth the risk from uknown quantity on ebay, for 100 quid, imho. get some new tyres or something else that actually makes a difference.

And the reason those chips arent quite optimal is because they have to take those variations into account.

The moment you ignore all those variations and optimise it for one specific engine right on the ragged edge, is the moment that you will then find that one some engines it makes worse power than standard.

The only exception really being, a lightly tweaked map to be run on 99RON fuel only or similar.

well that seller emailed me back regarding the rev limit and he answer is as follows

    Hi mate,
You can rev it lower if you want, however 8000rpm is more than safe
    for stock c18xe.
    Thank you.

hmmm realy lol dont think i would like to do it tho ha

V-tec yes, but without variable valve timing I don't think it is wise, not even with stronger parts... But maybe I'm being too conservative...
