I have a leaking head gasket on my Cavalier V6. I`ve had Vauxhall take a look and quote me £450 all in. This doesn`t include sending the head away for skim or crack testing as they say it will not be required because of the type of leak.
There is no mayo in the engine and the rad expansion tank is completely clean, but it is visibly leaking oil onto my garage every night. It`s been like this for a while now. Its on one bank of cylinders only. The oil seems to be coming out of the engine cleanly rather than mixing internally. They are the only people to have looked at the engine, I trust they are not pulling one over on me and its actually the rocker gaskets! I have noticed a drop in performance of late, could this explain a head gasket?
So, if in vauxhalls opinion thats all that needs doing, and two weeks later the gasket goes again, where do I stand? I ask this because I can see a scenario where they will say "well mate, we couldn`t be sure, its always going to be dodgy, you`ve got a warped head, its going to be expensive blah etc" and then charge me again for the work, this time including the skimming and crack testing. If I plead ignorance (which I am anyway when it comes to mechanics) can I just say "I came to you with an oil leak, the problems back, its your problem?" Sounds simple but the grief I`ve had with vaux garages in the past makes me a bit edgy over this.
Any opnions much appreciated.
