Astra 1.8 SXI 2001 Engine Change

Hi guys im new on here. I was wondering if i could have some help with regard to doing an engine change on a 2001 1.8 SXI Astra. My other half recently clumped the sump whilst going down to her stables (lowered car ) and dumped all the oil and has spun a shell. Now i need to chuck another engine in. As i cant be bothered to rebuild it as from what i understand this particular engines are readily available and not to expensive i was wondering if there is anything that i should be aware of when doing the conversion. I am mechanically competant to a degree (i do all my own work on my clio) engine change, clutch, gearbox etc etc and i would have thought this would be more difficult as its in a tighter space than the astra (sorry if i made anyone from mentioning a clio).

So basically any help would be greatly appreciated.

The first problem i have is i dont know the engine code. I have been told two different variations and tbh i not to sure if either one is correct. My gf seems to think its a Z18XE1 and a mate has told me its a X18XE. Unfortunatley as im clueless on vauxhalls i dont know who to believe lol. Could someone tell me where i could find the information of the engine as last time i looked it was dark which made it a tad difficult .

Apart from doing the Cambelt and waterpump (and possibly tensioners) would you recommend anything else whilst the engine is out of the car.....maybe a clutch?

    Thanks for your help people

    Dan

If it's got a throttle cable it's an X18XE1 (note the "1" at the end, not an X18XE), if it's got an electronic thottle it's a Z18XE. From memory a 2001 should be a Z18XE, but it's close to the point they changed from the X18XE1 to the Z18XE so double check either by confirming what sort of throttle you have or by checking the code stamped on the block.

The engine code and number should be stamped vertically on the front edge next right next to the mating surface of the gearbox.

I'd do a cambelt kit (includes tensioner and idler pulley) on any second hand engine unless you have solid proof it's recently had one, if you do the cambelt anyway a new waterpump won't hurt. Inspect the clutch and see how much meat is left on it, but if the box is off anyway it's a worthwhile job if just for your own peace of mind.

Thanks for the speedy response. Also its a Z18XE then as i know it has a digital throttle by the way it drives (i have a personnel hatred to them) I shall confirm though. So its pretty standard stuff then with any engine change then nothing that tends to go wrong on these then? (Oh yeah its not french doh).

Tbh i would do a cambelt even if there was proof as its not worth the risk.

How much would i expect to pay do you think for a half decent one and what sort of mileage?

    thanks for the advise.

a decent motor will cost you about £300. try an get an astra one not a vectra one, otherwise you'llhave to swap the drivers mount etc.
    Project Astra Aero is underway.............
