all that expense bin the 1400 and use 1600 or even 1800 unless class dictate otherwise.

    Re: engine builders

Taking the head off and doing the flywheel and all that work in place doesn't sound like a good plan though. If you can get a built engine off someone and pay someone to give you a hand...

No, 1600 small block will and is pretty powerful, there's a rare 1800 small block valver too. Then it's different gearbox, shafts, mounts for big blocks.

At Tathan says in his other posts, unless there is a class restriction in place to stop you it would make a lot of sense going for a bigger engine, especially if you ase using a standard auto gearbox with shift points that wont allow you exploit revving the car very well anyway, so anything that improves midrange torque (which extra CC will) is going to be a winner.

    Re: engine builders

Just a thought, is the ECU the same or easily moddable with auto vs manual?

No that's an XEL iirc, low power variant. Corsa 1600 is better.

    Re: engine builders

Should think the ecu would need a different map on it if you fitted it to a 1600 engine

Would it not make more sense to just sell you car and buy a faster one?

    Re: engine builders

What are you looking for with the rebuild?
You may be much better off having a core engine built up and then doing a direct swap. As has been said, a larger engine normally gives a wider torque/power range for the same maximum power - very useful with an automatic.
Have a good think about it - it may even be a sounder idea doing a straight trade off with a larger engined car, rather than modify what you've got.
Do any British/European companies do higher stall torque converters, as is normal practice in the States?
