    Whats happened to my clutch

9 months ago, and just 1500miles I fitted a helix 4 paddle clutch to my corsa (210bhp xe on tbs with a quaife). the friction plate was brand new, the pressure plate wasnt.

recently ive found it hard to select gears, and when driving the other night I crunched 4th and the pedal went up towards the dash... it drives, just but is very hard to select gears, and when the clutch isnt pressed there is a rattling noise from the box as tho the friction plate is still touching the flywheel.

i cant see me killin a paddle clutch in such a short amount of time, should i assume the 2nd hand pressure plate has failed, and if it is that, do i NEED an uprated one to go with my paddle, or willl a standard one do?

Symptoms are similar to those of a breaking up friction plate.
If the 'box has the inspection plate and it's a flat flywheel, you may be able to see some damaged friction pads.

Probably going to be a clutch out job, though!

yes, same thing, did you fit a new one with the clutch ... if so they can still go anytime anyway. But if you didn't then that would be No'1 suspect.

Re: Whats happened to my clutch

no a thrust bearing is on the crankshaft and not the same thing, although in this thread the thrust bearing that vxlgsi is referring to is the release bearing.

common misuse of the word although recognised by it but meh it's not actually the same thing

Was considering that, but usually means a low pedal, rather than a higher one - he'll find out when the box comes out...
I've had issues a couple of times on other engines with the hub springs breaking/coming adrift - if it's a sprung hub?

The rivets have snapped on the friction plate, quite a common problem !!!

Gordo; was indeed a sprung hub/plate.. if the rivets have snapped on the friction plate then it'll be going back! Less than a year old and less than 1,500miles isn't on!!

Moving house this week so not sure when it'll be coming apart, but that's it for this years fun I think. Once it's in the garage its engine out and see whats what.

No, your wrong actually its the other way round, it IS a thrust bearing, commonly called a release bearing..

"A thrust bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other rotary bearings they permit rotation between parts, but they are designed to support a high axial load while doing this"

No, he is right - but not in this case - thrust bearings, AKA shims or washers, control the longitudinal movement of a (crank) shaft.

Re: Whats happened to my clutch

its a "thrust bearing", and its application is as a "release bearing"

One specific thrust bearing in an automobile is the clutch "throw out" bearing, sometimes called the clutch release bearing
this is a CRANK thrust bearing

this is a clutch release thrust bearing

and this is a spigot bearing that supports the gearbox input shaft in the flywheel

I see where you're coming from but try explaining all that to the jobsworth at the parts counter who only sees "release bearing" on his screen lmao

As of yet, there may be nothing wrong with it - I haven't taken it all apart yet.
