best way to tune c20ne 2.0 8v lump?

    hello all,

ive got x2 mk2 cavaliers. one is a rotten 2.0 cdi which is the donar car, and the other is a 1.6 gl.

    donar engine is C20NE from 1987 E-reg Cavalier mk2 2.0 cdi.

im planning on fitting the 2.0 8v lump from the cdi to the gl, and then tuning it.

    so far ive got:

1.8 8v mpi astra mk1 GTE cylinder head, gasflowed ported & polished
    Kent camshaft
    Piper vernier pulley
gasflowed inlet manifold & throttle body

also going to get 4 branch manifold & downpipe, and superchipped ecu.

anything else i could do to it to up the power? different injectors or something (that wont cause it to overfuel too much)

also, whats the best gearbox to use, im after something that will give good acceleration, but not wack the top end right down at the same, but im more bothered about topend speed, and it being compatable with the c20ne engine.

    thanks

You could get a set of c20xe pistons and put them in and that would up the compression. Piston are always popping up on ebay and arnt to expensive plus the good thing is they will fit straight onto ne conrods. as for the gearbox an f16 cr box would give you plenty of acceleration but top end wil be effected. It should still pull 125-130mph tho. the f20 cr has slightly longer ratios and will top at 140. Personally i would go for a longer ratio box as you will have plenty power with all of your mods to push up the revs. Hope this is of some use.

good acceleration box is the f16cr.

get a turbo kit for it

Trouble is that an F16cr from the like of a mk1 Astra GTE is gonna rev it's nuts off on the motorway .
The best F16 you can fit is from the SRi130 Cavalier .
Sensible ratios with top speed and very close gears .
I canny invest in ya and for that reason , I'm oot .

best way to tune it depends on what you want out of it.
these engines will never blow your socks off in n/a form unless it's in a mini or something.

I don't want to sound like a twat as obviously you've already put some effort/money into finding bits, and you probably already know this but £ for £ it will never be as good as a 16v engine purely because of the valve area and flow of the head. Na power = more valves = more revs = better.

the heads respond well to porting/polishing though and removing the bottom of the valve guides apparently (source: How to Build, Modify and Power Tune Cylinder Heads (Speedpro))

btw xe pistons won't go on ne/seh rods, you need to use xe pistons and xe rods

Make the car lighter and handle better. Then when you have money/inclination/desire to fit an XE, your work won't have been a waste.

How good will bike carbs be on the c20ne engine though due to its lower compression, what benefits will you get from them ??

turbo is the way forward, the engine is even relatively low compression, in fact im pretty sure its the same as an LET. and you could run LET management aswell, ive seen it done

What about bike carbs on this engine then. Some may have a small budget like myself

    hello all,

will XE pistons and conrods fit and work in the NE block then, and is there much of a power gain?

im stripping the car out to a bare shell apart from front 2 seats, dashboard and drivers doorcard, poss leave the front carpets in too.

think im gona stick with the F16 box thats on it, and just put a lightened flywheel and uprated clutch kit on it. i'l see if i can find a C/R F16 box, depends how much they are.

    dust off

xe piston & rods fit on NE crankshaft/block, power gain is little little little.... unless you use SA ECU

and you'd be good using an xe head aswell, because xe pistons have 4 valve pockets at angles, when ne/seh pistons have round flat pockets... wouldnt be long before you bent/touched a valve doing that kinda nonsense.

I know some time has passed since the thread was really active but why not use SEH pistons?
