Unhappy ** Car wont start - Urgent help needed please **

New engine was put in on Saturday. I drove it home and all seemed well. However, this morning the engine cut-out a couple of times - it didnt stall, it was running fine, it just died.
ANyway, this evening it will start, but as soon as I disengage the starter it dies.
Battery is fine, interior light and headlights work. Plugs are OK aswell.
I am thinking it might be a lose plug or something as the engine was just put in, and that would explain why it cut out a couple of times this morning, but ran fine otherwise.
    Any ideas please?

give the fuel pump relay a whack. then go round all the major sensors, and give the connectors a wiggle. Stuff like the injectors, air flow metre, hall sensor (on top of the distributor) coil plug etc.

Right, just checked the distributor. When testing for a spark, I held the leads about 2mm off the bolt on the suspension turret and there was nothing.
The actual contact (when it fits onto the plug) is quite far in from the rubber, so is this close enough for the voltage to jump the gap?
There is a strong spark from the coil, so I am thinking distributor problem.

the plug slides up inside the end of the lead. You should hear a nice reassuring click as the connector snicks over the plug.

Oh and you have to actually ground the plug to get it to work. i.e let it touch the enging block, or better still jam it in that little engine lifting loop on the back right of the head.

i wouldnt advise holding the lead while you do this, not unless you want X thousand volts earthing down yoour index finger, just rest it on the block so it dont move, and go back and turn the engine over.

Stick a screwdriver into the lead and look for a spark.

I was trying the lead without the plug on - it has worked before, but I want to be 100% sure. OK, I am going outside to see what I get - let you know in a minute guys...

right, some more gen. Spark is fine afterall, but not surprised, as I just noticed this:

When I turn the key to position II it lights up but then dies immediately. The engine will then turn over in position III but doesnt start.

    any gen on that?

Do you mean that the dash lights up and then goes out? Its an earth somewhere and a strange one at that.

Location of earth straps everyone? Check the one on the gearbox as thats quite large and looked (to me) as if it might wear with a bit of age. Theres a large one off the alternator too.

You sure that earth lead is on the battery fully? It was apin getting that off and last time it wouldn't start (after washing it remember?) the lead was fully on, I only taped it and then it worked.

    Obviously you need a torch

CHeck its not just water sitting in a plug from when I jet washed the engine off etc. Then also check the earth on the battery as I noticed that it would not do up fully tight !!! Apart from that I need too look at it.

Richard, I noticed the battery terminal was lose, and the bolt was threaded, so i put another bolt on so the connection is now fine.

No water in the plu bores, and I did quite a few miles last night - it ran well, and apart from cutting out a few times this morning it was actually driving really well.

Cemesis, yeah, all the dash lights on the digidash on stage 2 come on then go off quickly.

Try it tomorrow morning. Email me with what happens as I'll be able to log in on one of the test machines during the day.

I know it sounds stupid but if it doesn't start try rocking the engine a bit and trying again. Probably won't help but worth a try.

theres a big earth just above the passenger side headlight, whip that off, clean up all the connectors with emery cloth, bolt it back on and smear with petrol jelly. ditto for the big braided earth strap that goes from the top left hand corner of the gearbox end case to the passenger side chassis rail.

    finally sorted the problem...

    For everyones info:

Tuesday: I checked every plug and earth I could think of, and the car seemed OK- drive to pub and fine.
Leaving pub it cut out first time I started, but then restarted and it made it home
Wedensday: Richard, Scott and I had a think about the problem, and looked at the battery negative lead which looked a bit worse for wear. So, later that evening, I went to Halfords and bought a battery terminal and earth lead.
However, when I returned to the car it wouldnt start, infact stage II on the ignition wouldnt illuminate at all.
I called Scott out with his tools, and we fitted the battery earth and new lead, but to no avail!
Ah ha! Scott had a brainwave and started hitting the steering column Low and behold the lights on the dash flickered!
Right then! off with the relevent steering column covers and we discover the problem at last!:
Ignition barrel was not plugged in properly - a push and it clips in, I guess when the alarm was fitted they didnt put it back right!

So, car is now fine and I am happy!

Special thanks to Scott and PC World for providing good lighting in the car park with which to work by

Yeah, overall things went really well tho.
Might go to a rolling road at some point, but I would like to get a decent exhaust first.

Is it blowing then? If not I'd leave it. I still have the standard exhaust (silencers removed) and you know how well my car goes.

And the pipe from the cat to the backbox is more busted than Gary Glitter in a school playground.
