Ok after checking the bible(Haynes) it appears my plugs are all covered in black soot which it says is caused by an over rich fuel mixture, can anyone else confirm this and would it be the main cause of eratic slow driving eg just feathering the throttle round town making it seem to jump as though im repeatedly pushing the trottle pedal really quickly and letting go, yet on full throttle it seems to max revs before the red line as though it cant push anymore and just hangs there without loss of power or any gain.
Before i get ripped off by local garages is this just a case of adjusting the fuel/air mixture.
Black sooty plugs are extremely common on these old cav's!
I've got a 1.6 and they are always black at services - reason being is that the AUTO CHOKE sticks and runs rich, you could try to clean the carb and grease up all the linkages but it will happen again - garunteed! Pootling round town wont help either. Regulatr servicing and the engine will be fine. my cavs done 185,000 miles on the same engine (plugs been black for last 48K MILES) and i dont find any problems - however the engine may be running rich also because of the Hose from the Manifold to the Airfilter is missing! when the engine gets hot it adjusts how much air enters the carb, the hotter the engine the less fuel there is and it should turn the choke off!
what matt said is correct, but if its injection it will be the electronic equivelant of the choke which as mentioned earlier is the ECU coolant temperature sensor. Think its round the back of the block above the altenator area.
