Thumbs up How to fit a Quaife ATB in a F20.

I've just bought a 3rd hand ATB diff for a F20 gearbox, and throught I'd post up a (DONK) how to fit, as the Haynes is pretty vage on it, and couldn't find any pictures on here

I've got my van in bits at the moment, so the gearbox was drained, and in my shed

(This is how I'd do it I'm not trained so if someone wants put to their own tips in feel free)

This is it. It already had the speedeo drive and a bearing, fitted

Like I said, my gearbox is in the shed, with most of the oil drained out, I started by removing the bolts in this diff seal, you'd be better off taking the diff cover off first.
But I did this bit first.

Once the bolts are out you can gently leaver it out.

As with working on any car I seem to take a knuckle off

^^^ is that part a necessary step in fitting a ATB diff?
Note: the above may or may not be entirely correct.

As you can see I've taken the cover off on the box, and now for the cowboy work
The only thing I could find that fitted the gaps in the castle nut, was the peg spanner from my grinder, so I used some grips for some leaverage, it came undone fairly easy
Just keep on turning it till it comes out.

If you give it a wiggle the diff comes out with ease.

I've now taken it over to my vice, and removed all of the bolts from the big gear, I used some padding on the jaws just in case I damaged the cog.

I've now taken it out of the vice, and led it on it's side, and gently tapped it with a soft hammer.

And this is the ATB in the gear, it again needed bit of a wiggle, I then fitted all the bolts, and tighten it all up. I'm missing one of the bearings, so I'm gonna get one in the week, and up-date my progress soon.

Sorry I'm a bit late but been really busy, and the weather has been poo, anyway had bit of a break from the rain so throught I'd best get the diff fitted.
I'd bought the bearing, and a gasket off Mr Slim, which turned up mega quick, and at a really good price, so hat off to SBS.

I got my mate Kev to fit the bearing, at his work because they have got a press, which I don't, sorry didn't get any pictures of that.

Also before I had changed the oil seal on one, found it to be a right pain in the bum, so didn't bother doing the other one, and the one I did leaked like hell, so I've replaced the leaking one, with the spare one I had floating about, hence the picture at the top.

Re: How to fit a Quaife ATB in a F20.

I used a socket before to knock the seal in, which was a bit too small, which in turn damaged it and made it leak. But when the bearing turned up I noticed that coller for it is the perfect fit, to use it as a drift.

So I tapped the old one out from the back.

Lubed her up, and knocked the new one back in, and I'd forgotten it can be a right git to get back in

Back to my shed, I needed to clean out, all of the old oil mixed with water, which I did with a oil only rag.

Re: How to fit a Quaife ATB in a F20.

So what I did next was start to fit the diff back into it's home, I first put the bolt in seal into place, which should slide in most of the way, when lined up correct, and then fitted the diff into postion, and then wound in the castle nut. I found if you wiggle it a bit it all does up most of the way by hand.

I then kept on doing everything up till, I didn't have any movement in anything.

Re: How to fit a Quaife ATB in a F20.

Last of all I sprayed everything with carb cleaner, added a bit of RTV to the gasket faces, and put the cover plate back on. I'm not a fan of sealer but I had the little before, and didn't want another one.

This is it with the plate on.
I hope this helps, sorry I'm not trained, so hope I've got everything right.
I'll get a video up once, my car is built back up and run in.

    Thanks for looking Mike.
