    Most reliable 1.6

I've got my hands on an e16se in bits for my second mini conversion, not sure where to use it or not. What i wanted to know was which of the vast range of 1.6 vauxhall engines is the most reliable, i'm intending on pumping some nitrous though it too so this needs to be taking into account.

well C16XE is a baby redtop, which as this lot know are pretty bullet proof! 16v, nippy as standard. Nice noise too :P. Although in your mini an 8v engine would feel punchy as hell, and i have never once head a core engine failure on an 8v engine where as i have in the 16v. im not sure if there is any relation or its just my experience. And all engines are victims of ancillary failure, which of course can do internal damage depending on what fails!

Its personal preference i would say but the gm motors are not too bad for reliablilty and tunability.

    !peace!

Surely it would make more sense to put an XE in it, rather than waste your time and money on a low powered 1600?

Or even spend a bit of cash on tuning the A-seres. My mates stage 4 1380 made over 100bhp @ the wheels and he's not gone as far as he could've. Its only running an HR44 metro carb and a standard exhaust manifold!

Although, to answer your original question, im sure they are just as reliable as the full blown 20xe's.

dont know of the most reliable but the least reliable has to be the x14xe and x16xe, i dare you to find one above 100k miles that hasn't had valve/piston mishmash!
i don't know what the difference is between the X and C engines as above they are both 16v.
i'd be tempted to stick with the 8v e16se if you already have it!, very simple cam & valve train, fewer valve seals to wear out and less lifters to tap lmao.
never seen a smallblock 8v rod but the 16v rods were very skinny so wouldn't do more than a 50 shot personally lol.
for cheap thrills, stick a 20seh in there for £50 and be done with it, 130hp as standard.

    Re: Most reliable 1.6

    cheers, guys.

This is going to be just a run about that isn't too much to handle so don't want too much power. I've had a c20xe mini on throttle bodies for the last 12 years seeing over 200 stallions so not fussed about the power side on this one, just reliability really.

What are the z16se motors like, i've seen a few about and they're quite widely available. i was thinking c16se but these are getting really hard to source (whole car)

for hard core reliability i'd say a C16SE dispak engine, these engines never miss a beat!

    The 20SEH is pretty indestructable!

My old Cavvy is on 186,000 now! No smoke and doesnt miss a bit! Gets hammered to the limiter everyday! lol

Surely it would be more cost effective to leave a standard 1275 in?

the 1.6 is a smaller block and weighs less than the big block, so the car will drive a little better with less weight in the front. Needs to go in a stock round nose too and it pretty much needs to be done as soon as the c20xe one is rebuilt.

I can't deal with the 1000cc auto any more, its driving me crazy!

The 1.6 8vs will take as much beating as an SEH, I had a 1.4 8v up to 250k with nothing done except regular servicing and one HG. Its not like the will be under stress pulling a mini around anyway.
