    bad smoking from 1.6 16v

Hi guys i recently bought a 03 plate zafira, its now smoking really badly, if i start it and let it idle nothing happens, but as soon as i rev it, it smokes like mad, it smells like oil and its got a blue tinge to it aswell.

Its also misfiring at low revs but this could just be the coil pack or similar, any ideas as to what could be causing the oil burning

doesn't do it at all when idleing?? could be a piston ring, would have thought if it was sumit like a valve seal it would do it worse when starting up due to oil seeping into the cylinder when its off, you checked the oil for water\petrol in it as it could be head gasket leaking oil into one or more of the cylinders when the oil pressure increases when revved, could one of a few things!

hi mate the water seems fine nothing nasty in there, ive tryed a new coil pack and the misfire is no different, so whatever it is, is causing the misfire. Ive also noticed that the timing belt cover has been smashed near the front cam pulley, not sure if maybe its just someones just done it accidently or if maybe the timing belts snapped??

It does smoke on idle after its been revved for a first time but if i just start the car and never touch the throttle it wont put any smoke out

Sounds like the piston rings or the Valve stem seals are shagged

it depends on how much money and skill and time you have?, In alot of cases its Far easier to buy another engine, good/low milage, known working with warrenty for 250 to 350 (which is what i believe they go for) and fit it or have it fitted.

If it has a misfire and is smoking, its a piston - either has a hole in it, or the oil rings have gone -

If you are good with spanners, rip the sump off and take the piston out and change it - this is a bit of a gamble as the bore may be damaged too, but you should be able to tell when the piston is out....

If you arent so good, and that scares you - get a new engine!

timing cover smashed? possibly down to a timing belt jump? if its jumped previously, the owner may have timed back up in order to get it 'running' again and flogged on a sly one. could have a piece of valve bouncing around in there messing stuff up and scoring your bore. regardless of how sounds like it needs a good fooking rebuild or a new motor mate sorry to say. Similar thing happened to me with a fiat. seemed to run fine when i brought, then it started coughing out smoke and losing power. Eventually stripped to find foreign metal smeared along the bore and some nackered rings. win some ya loose some!

bought it to put a new engine in so no real loss really as i expected a new lump to go in it, never dropped a piston out but i can do headgaskets, cam belts and stuff but thats as far as ive gone so far so may have a bash at it. never ventured to the bottom end LOL!

Its definatley got quite a bad miss and a real lack of power

some old diesels do it that much oil bypassing the rings it starts running on it and revs to the sky, till it either burns all the oil and seizes or knocks a piston or two.
