I bought a mint nova gsi 1.6 8v courtenay turbo a months ago. I was wondering if I were to chip it would I be able to run more boost? I am currently running 9 psi and I always use optimax with NOS octane booster just in case. Also can anyone tell me what I need to run a bar of boost and what is the highest amount of boost these engines can take without blowing up.
i dont know the specifics of the courtney conversion but i expect its just the standard engine with thick head gasket to lower compression, then custom manifold and extra fuel swtich to trick the ecu into overfuelling. I also expect it only runs 8psi because of the above, i.e engine compression is slightly higher than on a geniune turbo engine. Its quite normal to run low pressure turbos on normally aspirated engines, well thats the easiest normal route for conversions anyway. Otherwise your looking at all sorts of bespoke items like low comp pistons etc.
so to up your power in basic terms you need to lower compression ratio, increase induction cooling (bigger intercooler, water injection, charge cooler) then find out how to actually make the turbo boost higher.
