With reference to another post I put up the other day, is there meant to be or is it acceptable to have a little play in the driveshaft. On the n/s shaft you can grab it and push it backwards and forwards about 1/2 cm? It has had a new outer CV joint put on it. The o/s shaft does not move at all.
Yeah, they will move about a bit. Basically it's to take up any slack. You gotta remember that the engine is hung on rubber mounts and the drive shafts go through the hubs which due to their nature move of course. There has to be play else everything would lock up and wear out.
As long as the drive shaft doesn't come out, it's fine. They secured via curclips. If you can just pull it straight out then a curclip is broken. If you need a lot or force to take it out then it's fine.
its should move about 2-3 inches in fact. Not really to take up play in rubber bushes, its because when the suspension compresses and extends the angle of the drive shafts change, and thus so does the distance between diff and hub, so the shafts are design to extend.
if it pulls out the circlip is not necessarily broken, it just means you one lucky son of a bitch. the longer drivers side shaft will pull out easily by the nature of its design.
I'm asking this question because there are now strange noises coming from the front n/s area since the CV joint was changed. Kind of a crunch sound when going over speed bumps and a click type noise every 2 seconds when turning full lock.
well bit weird really, partco and other aftermarket suppliers list 2 top mounts, one for all mk2 models except deisels (30 quid) and 1 for deisels (about 45 quid) So i bought and installed 2 deisel top mounts.
But, vauxhall only list one top mount for the entire range.
well thats the theory. It was me that started all this deisel upgrade malarky. So its either vauxhall dont think you neeed tougher top mounts and partco do, dunno.
Either way ive had a standard set from partco, and now the deisel set, and the deisel are tougher more compacted rubber, the top mount sticks out less through the top of the suspensin turret with the deisel set, if you see what i'm saying.
