    I can hear my tappets!

When I start up they rattle for 2-3 seconds. No big deal.
But I've started to hear them other times, after revving the engine a fair bit. It goes soon enough, but is this normal?

It could be to do with the loss of sound proofing, so I can hear what the engine is up to lot more clearly now.

What else could it be? Oil pressure is fine and it's new 10W-40 Magnatec, as per normal.

Maybe I should replace them when I'm feeling flush with cash later in the year?

Cmon then? Am I going mad or is just a sign that the engine's gonna blow?

Hmm, are you sure it's tappets and not just summink that's rattling away at certain revs? The cam on the Astra seems to make a crinkly rattley noise at ceertain revs (no, not pinking).
    Could be your cable-tied-to-column-clocks?

I had this when I bought the Astra (3 years ago). First I thought the water pump was knackered. Replaced, noise caried on. Alternator? Got one from scrappy, noise stayed. Drove with NO alternator at all. Noise still there.

It's the poxy cam belt cover. Try driving without one?

Maybe is the "small shapes"(i don't know correct name) moved fromn correct place of tappets.
I had this problem in my car. When you use a lot of in high rpm, can happen this.
Remove valve cover, and see if all things are ok. Rocker arms can crash too.

    I hope is nothing serious.

There are no rockers on a VX DOHC engine.

Wouldn't worry even if it is tappetts, they go on tapping forever, just another annoying noise!!

Get a Cone filter, bigger exhaust, or turn the stereo up!

Could also be manifold gasket. Is it worse under load?

yes there are. 8v cams dont ride directly over the valves, it cant cause they are offset. the cam rides on the middle of the rockers, the rockers rear end sits on the knuckle ontop of the hydraulic lifter, then the other end of the rocker presses valve open via thrust pads between the rocker and valve stem.

Loosing a valve thrust pad ends up with a loud ticking noise that doesn't go away.

Had fun putting one back in with just the rocker cover off. Right i'll push the valve down.... you slide it in...

I can hear the injectors but that's a different noise.
Fear not, I will take the rocker cover lid off and have a look on SatRday.
