maybe check the guys feedback? the advert reads well though, and as it says no chinese tat materials.
I had some off rallyman on here that came with arp's and I think they were slightly cheaper than those and it was no hassle waithing for packages from abroad.
feedback isn't that useful on stuff like that as it has to be left fairly promptly and generally reflects "Items arrived, in a box, fast delivery, they're shiny", not "Items broke after 500 miles and lunched my engine".
The problem is in PERCEIVED quality. Even "made in China" con' rods aren't neccessarily cheap rubbish but, not knowing the actual source, one doesn't know quite what one is buying - and the manufacturers history.
There's a specialist machine shop down south (of New Zealand) who will machine and treat 'rods to your specification - a mate had a copy of a Carillo (sp?) made at around half the price and it went into a 10k Toyota 4k engine, no worries.
Personally, I figure paying a bit extra for a KNOWN quality of 'rod is cheap insurance - at least until I have PERSONAL feedback from others that they're OK.
I would remind you that labour rates and other costs are WAY lower down here Aussie/NZ than in the UK, which would be a saving right there
No, it wasn't a diesel
10k RPM (oops) and a Toyota 4k is their designation for the old 1300 pushrod engine - thing made over 180hp.
It was in a mate's rally Starlet - was known for blitzing much more powerful 4wd Mitzi's and Scoobies - but then, he was absolutely fearless and an extremely good driver.
Most of the rods available i.e. scat, eagle etc are all billeted in china and machined in the states, thats why they all look the same, those look identical to the scat ones that i use and have never had a problem, they are alot cheaper in south africa though even the scat ones
scat are a big in the aircooled vw scene and tbh, lads are running 400+ out of flat 4 bug engines! but sure few years back when i was mucking about with bugs, that there was a debate about scat claiming there -products were all USA made and not from china
seems like theres mixed opinions + feeling about these rods as they are unknownI suppose all the big companies had to start somewhere just like these but after the replies im not sure id want to chance it in my engine unless there is some good confident feedback from people who have used these exact rods
the Taj Mahal (spelling) is still up, but I'd sooner have a set of rods made from Tin than to get some made from Steel from India... same goes for China, I've seen the quality of their work day in day out (for engines) and frankly its a joke
A guy on passionford is running some cheap steel rods in his evo.
You can see one of them here:
Ive never seen a set of arrows do that.
You pay your money and you make your choice at the end of the day, but if its an engine that matters, a few hundred quid extra for a set of arrows seems a good investment in terms of the extra insurance to me personally.
If someone offered to swap my arrows for a set of ebay rods, and give me a grand, I'd turn them down, Rods are a vital part of the engine and not worth hoping you get lucky with if you have other expensive components like I have, if a 300 quid set of rods lets go in my engine, it will probably cost me 5K!
its not the raw product thats the issue, its the worlds appart idea on what quality is in the far east.
We have a bike engine here that cant go over 4Krpm without some major life support as the "copy" and materials used (they think, oh its made form ali, therefore its fine) are utter rubbish.
Something that looks like what its supposed to be, isnt nessecaraly as good as the real thing
/\ Probably not worth risking the bolts though (if they come supplied)
Judging by the stuff we used to have made in Taiwan, their idea of the same spec material is laughable. They manage to produce stainless steel that rusts FFS!
we had a set of inlet manifolds come in from a different supplier (they were cheaper of course). Standing them side by side with the already SHOCKING manifolds that worked, you could see massive holes/inconsistencies... Then we fitted them, and sucessfully warped them at (wait for it)........... 50deg C!!!!!!! It took 5 skims to get them to a point that they stopped warping lmfao. This was for a production intent part too
i d run farndon as i have in my ka turbo cost almost 900 i think but worth every penny imo
i no a mate running eagle rods on a zetec turbo with 440bhp no problems as yet
when it comes to something as important as connecting rods are they worth skimping on..... i dont think so
you get what you pay for , 200 set of rods are not the same quality as a 800-900 set
thinking about it id rather go through someone i have some comeback with whether they are £350 or £850
I do agree with the whole spend abit more for the extra insurance as said they are vital but like all things brand names carry a few more £££ just for the name
Do anyone know for sure where arrow, eagle, etc rods are actually made?
you can always put these cheap rods to a stress test before using them on your project.
