93 Cavalier 1.8i LS advice

Hello Mig people.

I have recently passed my test adn bought a 1.8i Cavi.

Would like to get just a little more performance out of it without spending a fortune and dropping in another engine ;o).....

I have sorted out the bad suspension with Bilstein shocks and APEX springs \ Verstein Tyers

Afew questions if i may.

The CAT : should i remove it ? if so then do i put in stright pipe or replace with middle silencer, what kinda performance gain will it achieve ? and will it pass next MOT without it ? 1993 model !!

K+N ? yes or no ? filter for box or Cone Induction kit ?

Anything else you guys suggest will be much appreciated.

Thanx

not much you can do with these bud on little cash and even then its easier to drop a 130 in as its a straight swap

a k+n filter will help make things smoother but unless your finely tuned up on your engine and car you wont notice any difference

a decat will do very little if anything on a 1.8,im afraid ,im sure others will disagree but i have been playing with vauxhall engines all my life and unless your playing with performance engines (i.e redtops) decats will do nowt

for£100 or less you can pick up a 130 engine with an f16 c/r gearbox and you will be sorted

Re: 93 Cavalier 1.8i LS advice

I started out with the same engine, the C18NZ/90bhp (some 11 years ago) in one of my Cavs, no matter what I did to it little changed, its severly restricted by the single point inj.

As above the 20SEH (pre Aug 92 SRi 2.0 8valve) is a cracking engine, you can pick em up for next to nothing, its an instant 40bhp increase & its pretty easy to fit + you don`t need a cat on these engines.

If its purly insurance stopping you swapping the lump I can`t see there being a vast difference in cost, you could always tell em its the lower power C20 NE (a solid lump as well) in there , the two engines look indentical.

Re: 93 Cavalier 1.8i LS advice

That sounds like good advice right there guys, thanx alot. not trying to turn my cavy into a monster, just would like alittle more grunt and 40 more horses sounds about right.

I shall check out the insurance and see if i can track one down.

The F16 gearbox you mention, is is needed for that 20SEH engine or just a better box than my current one.

Sorry for the noob question ;O)

Thanx guys

Get the brakes and suspension sorted IMO. Forget about accelerating and concentrate on not losing any of that precious built-up speed round corners.

Re: 93 Cavalier 1.8i LS advice

Your gearbox will work fine (yours is an F16WR -Wide Ratio), the SRi`s had the F16CR (Close Ratio) which will give better acceleration.

One thing - you`ll need a clutch to suit the SEH`s flywheel (the cover at least) unless you use your existing flywheel but your Cav`ll have the heavier pot type flywheel rather than the lighter flat type (which the SEH has).
