I've just had a compression test done and cylinders 1 and 2 are low. Also these plugs are wet. This combined with an increase in noise over the last two weeks and the occasional smoke belch, leads me to believe the head gasket needs replacing.
I've been told the head will need skimming, is this true? the car has not overheated.. Also will new head bolts be needed?
I've had one quote which includes the head skim, relapping the valves, new valve stem seals, gasket set, engine service + labour for 240 quid, is this reasonable?
If it wasn't for the head skimming and relapping the valves i would be tempted to do it myself, is it fairly straight forward? Bare in mind i've never worked on an XE before but have worked on mini engines.
