Fairly sure diesel models will be very similar with respect to this date - whether or not they retained OBD1 until 2002 Im not sure

Either way, if its a later model then fear not....DIY error code diagnosis is available

Early models (upto 2000) - use the good old paperclip method: http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...69&postcount=4
(ignore the other references in this post as its lifted directly from another thread)

later models (2000 onwards) - use the both pedal method: http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...78&postcount=2

Thanks for posting this but I can't get the after year 2000 method to work. I've tried pressing both break and accelerator down without the key, then put the key in and turned the ignition without starting it but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, didn't realise you had to connect pins 5 & 6 as well. Just tried it and it worked.

    Re: Reading ECU fault codes

Yeah I read the sticky but I thought it meant that the pre-2000 model required the paperclip and the post 2000 just needed both pedals pressed. Anyhow, looks like I found what I wanted. It gave me codes 0170, 0130, and 0340. I can only assume that the last 0 is ignored since the range only goes up to 95. So we have 17 - knock signal circuit, 13 - lambda sensor and 34 - map sensor. I've already replaced the lambda sensor not too long ago so I'm wondering whether it has just remembered the code. The map sensor is so far eluding me because I can't seem to locate it. The Haynes manual is useless as it shows a tiny little photo that doesen't really mean anything to me and all I know is that it's somewhere behind the bulkhead. But for the life in me and cannot find it. The knock sensor I have found but don't yet know what to do with. Any help would be much appreciated.

Albert, the last zero is there for a reason, its a four digit code.

Hi, the engine is X16XEL and it's an Astra 1600, 16v 2001 x reg. The problem is there is no power when I put my foot down. On the motorway when it comes to a slight incline I can't get above 40 with my foot fully down. There is a low sounding noise that gets louder as you try to increase throttle.

The em light comes on sometimes but not that often. But when it does come on it stays on for a bit.
Sorry I will only post on the other thread from now on. It's just that my original post was in answer to the sticky.
