Transfer box question
Is it possible to use the later tx box on a j reg calibra 4x4? Am I right in saying the only difference was the temp sensor? The one that was in my car was a two wire one? What were the later ones?
Single wire for the new one. You will need a later type 4x4 ECU to use the later type box.
Thanks for the quick response, Can u just change the ecu or do you have to change other stuff?
Sorry no, you'll need the wiring harness as well.... Meant to say that
Complete circuits are actually changed between old and new units.
Have a look here at the 2 differences - Early (2 wire) sensor Later (single wire) sensor
See how pins change locations etc ??
What problem are you having with it ??
is it not possible just to use the early sensor in the later box?
Even if you were to change the ECU I think the MPH speed sensors are different. (different pulse per mile)
Therefore I think all you need to do is.
1) Buy a temp sensor hole size converter from cav 16. (not cheap)
2) Just short the two wires together on the transfer box temp sensor AND ENSURE ALL TYRES ARE KEPT THE SAME TREAD WEAR.
So you can use the later one, is the later sensor smaller or bigger? if I can get the earlier sensor in the box surely it will work, it only has to be touching the oil so it can switch when the oil over heats?
The actual ECU connections (e.g. what pin 1 is for etc) are different for both ECU's - 2 wire temp sensor 1 wire temp sensor
So ECU is diff but so will the actual multiplug connector.
Theoretically, you could strip down a multiplug and re-wire it using this diagram to show you the basics. *** Pics from Richard King's Workshop Manual Site ***
This is what my old transfer box looks like
I bought the car with the tx box in that condition, I'm going to be looking after it
but if the cases and the insides are the same can you just not fit the early sensor into the later box and it will work?
Yeah, do as Andy suggests and you'll be fine.... But you wont have any temp sensor as a failsafe.
Originally posted by Richard Howe but if the cases and the insides are the same can you just not fit the early sensor into the later box and it will work?
surely, the temp sensor has to be in contact with the oil for it to work on either box
Why short the wires if I use the sensor of an older box
I was starting to dripple thinking to hard about this aswell,
I didn't understand why it was so confusing.
Last question, is the later sensor bigger or smaller than the older one?
Gold star to the first person to answer,
Andy or Richie
Early (2 wire) is bigger IIRC
Thank christ I am leaving work in 10 mins
actually, wait I just engage my brain,
If it converts the new to old, the newer one must be bigger?
Replied the same on CavWeb BTW.... More to stop ppl being left confused from my drivellings lmao
No, you're right lmao EARLY IS SMALLER
God my head really hurts now
You dont get off lighty!
Can you tell from the part no if it is an older or newer box?
I'm looking at buying one with the no 90 423 279, its apparently done 25k
Thats coming up on EPC as an F28, not a transfer box Rich.
BTW, if you want you can join the temp sensor wires together as AndyK says until you get a convertor.
Apparently when you get a re conned box from cav 16 dorfburg (SP) they all come back with the same size temp sensor hole.
If this isn't the right size for you then you have to use a convertor.
Cav16 does convertors both ways but one is more expensive.
