From my experience a late GTE 16v has 2 boxes in the system and then a back box. This pic is one of the boxes which I always thought was the cat. Can anyone confirm this?

out of curiosity what plate is your gte.
and i thought that cats were only on vehicles after j plate![]()
Ok, this is gonna be quite confusing.
My GTE is J-reg with an early G-reg Coscast engine. But this has nothing to do with this exhaust.
This exhaust is not from my car-I don't know the origins of it. I have had H-reg GTEs which have had a cat (or at least 2 boxes in the system plus the back box). As I understand it late GTEs i.e. H and J reg have a cat and lambda sensor. The early GTEs have neither.
looks more like a 'box' and a 'cat'.... Looks too big for a cat...
But the easy way to see is look down the pipe.... if you can see a flat mesh of hunnycomb then its a cat... if its a pipe going through with baffles then its a box.

The reason I ask is because I am selling this as a cat on ebay, however some bloke has messaged me telling me it's a normal silencer box. I have always been confused by this, hence this thread I found by me in the archives:
GTE exhaust. Which box is cat?
This thread confirms it's a cat.
Ok, according to my Walker exhaust book, Mk2 GTE made between march 1988 and september 1991 with 2.0 16v engine have a CAT, it bolts directly to the downpipe and then to the centre box. Hope that helps!

Excellent Toby. That's as I thought then. So it's defo a cat. I will continue advertising it as so and ignore any more messages telling me it's a normal silencer.
thats a normal box, not a cat, cats are welded together round the edges, that looks to be just pressed flat at the seams.
dont go by exhaust book/maunfactuers say as they vary, the GTE should of come with a cat but you can buy non cat replacemnts if the cat isnt needed, ie a pre MY93 car.
the only way to tell for deffinate is to do what Add says and look throught it.
Oh great. Looks like I may have to amend my eBay add then.
i do agree it doesnt look like a cat, best bet to be sure is to unbolt it and look down the end as said before, I was just stating what Walker says should be on there.

Definitely looks like a silencer, not a cat
Yep, that's a cat replacement. Ideal to get rid of a cat withouth the rest of the exhaust sounding droning. I have one in the shed with the threads stripped out.![]()
They're there, in their room.
