ive knackered the bottom end of my cally redtop, someone has told me that the bottom end is the same of that on an ecotec, is this correct
Could i just bolt my redtop top end onto an ecotec bottom end
They can be used together, I'm sure there's more to it than just bolting it up though. There's quite a few threads on here where people have done this.
yeah im sure this can be done aswell but remember the redtop bottom end had a practically bombproof crankshaft that in standard form could handle 250bhp+, u should source another redtop bottom end theres a few on ebay and just replace the main and big end bearings put some arps on there and u will nether have to worry bout it again
you cannot directly bolt the head on, the pistons require valve pockets on both inlet and exhaust, the ecotecs just have them on the inlet, and the actual valve angle is different to so the pockets need to be at the correct angle too.
very true on tha valve pockets and the stonger crank in the early 16v's (not to say the eco crank is weak).
one other bit, the rod bearings are the same but the main bearings are different. the blocks are cut the same for the bearings but the ecotec crankuses a smaller thrust bearing. what ever way you go, eco crank or red top crank, you have to get bearings to match the crank not the block.
cheers for all the advice lads, think after hearing all that its actually worth just getting another redtop bottom end
